How to upload Blogger XML templates

    July 03, 2007 7 Comments

If you're bored of the generic templates supplied by Blogger, you can easily upload a customised XML template, such as the Blogger Buster templates found here. Here's a step by step guide.

    1. Download your favorite Blogger XML template to your computer. If the template is contained in a zip file, ensure you have extracted the XML template.
    2. Log in to your Blogger dashboard and go to Template> Edit HTML
    3. Ensure you back up your old template in case you decide to use it again. To do this, click on the "download full template" link and save the file to your hard drive.
    4. Look for the section near the top where you can browse for your XML template:
    5. Enter the location of your template and press "upload".
    6. The HTML of your new template will now appear in the box below. You can preview your template or simply save to start using it!

      Hello Aslam,

I've noticed many people are experiencing problems uploading XML templates lately. My first point of advice would be to upload new templates using the template code if possible (where you can copy and paste HTML based template code into your edit HTML box). I know that not all template providers will provide the HTML code as well as the XML version, though if you ask they may be able to make this available.

I am also researching error codes with particular regard to templates for a future post which I hope will help people experiencing these problems. It will probably be a while before this is complete as there are many things to consider when writing this up. Check back soon for updates and I will post this as soon as it is ready.

Hope this is useful to you so far.

Best wishes and thanks for stopping by,

      Amanda

Hi i was watching the image on how to upload the template and
realized that on my "Edit Html tab in my settings i don't have the link to download template or
"backup/restore template" just the old Edit Html alone. Could someone help me?

      For Marilyn Bowen:

Unfortunately the widgets are left out when you upload a non-standard template (though they remain if you use a standard Blogger one!).

Luckily it is possible to transfer the widgets from one template to another. This post explains the process in full, which I hope will be useful for you.

      For Thugg:

It sounds like you're still using a Classic Blogger template (without the drag and drop widgets).

If you would like to upgrade your template to the XML based ones with widgets, you can do this from within the Template section of your dashboard. There should be a tab which says "Upgrade" which will take you through the steps.

      Hope this helps!
