Top Commenter's Widget for Blogger Blogs!

    March 10, 2008 48 Comments

Would you like to display a list of the top commenters in your blog? This widget will enable you to do exactly that! If you install this widget, a list of the top ten people who have commented most in your blog will be displayed with along with the count of comments they have made.

This is a great way of thanking readers who comment regularly and is very easy to add to your blog layout using the one click widget installer

To install this widget in your own blog, simply change the title to suit your preferences and alter the URL to match that of your blog.

If your blog has a Blog*Spot URL, you should enter your URL like this:

    yourblog.blogspot.com
If you use a custom domain for your blog, simply enter the URL of your blog's domain.

In either case, do not add the "http://" part! This is already rendered by the script used to display the commenter feed.

If you would like to remove your own name from the list, enter your name in the "Filter Your Name" box.

Use the form below to add this widget to your own Blogger powered blog:

This widget is based on the Top Commentators Widget for Blogger which was created by Assess My Blog. It uses Yahoo Pipes to process the last 500 comments made on your blog, and displays a list of the ten people who have commented the most in this range.

Each name is linked to the most recent comment on your blog made by this person (since it would be very difficult to create a generic script which would work for all blogs and comment settings!).

Update: I have now added an extra element which allows you to remove your own name from the list of Top Commenters (thanks to Carrotmadman6 for the tip!).

I have tested this extensively in IE6/7 and Firefox and in these browsers the script and display work just fine. If anyone notices a glitch or problem in other browsers, please let me know so I can work on solving the issue.

If you find this widget useful, please tell your friends or bookmark this post using your favorite service. I have worked long and hard to create this installer and really appreciate your help in spreading the word about this new tool :)

If you like Yahoo Pipes take a look at my MacrosReader and play with more than 25 pipes.

For Dan: Thank you for the link, I'll take a look at that now.

For Mudiva: I'm glad this works well for you. There are still a couple of features I'd like to work on which could improve the widget a little, though for the time being this seems to do the job quite well :)

Thank you so much for your kind comments. I'm always open to suggestions if there's anything specific you'd like to know about Blogger.

      Best wishes,

      Amanda

      Hola Amanda:

Jose a secas and me want to konw if it is possible to remove our own names from the list. I haven´t understood what you mean when you say "you would need to create your own pipe and ad a filter". Please, write up that article about it.

And I also think that if you want to thanking readers who comment regularly with this widget, it would be much better that each name was linked to this person's blog instead of to the most recent comment on your blog made by this person.

I agree with yo misma, if we could take out our own names and have a link that would go to the persons blog instead of the post they replied to.

Yes, i agree with the above commenters that we would like the tutorial on how to remove your own name & link each commenter to their blog or their Blogger profile!

Anyway, thanks a lot for this GREAT widget! :)

For Jose, Yo Misma, Mudiva and Carrotmadman6: Thank you all for your comments. I will be writing up the tutorial tomorrow to explain how to remove your own names from the output of top commenters.

Unfortunately though, I've had some great difficulty in providing links to the author's home/profile pages.

I've been experimenting with Yahoo Pipes all day in an effort to somehow accomplish this (and a similar widget I'm working on).

The problem with linking to individual blogs/profiles is that the comments feed used in this widget does not include the URL of the commenter, only the author's name. The only way to find the commenter's URL is to extract this from the actual blog post on which the comment has been left. This may be possible but so far I haven;t been able to accomplish this myself.

(If Blogger would publish the author's URL in the comments feed this would make the task SO MUCH simpler!).

I do hope you all like this widget, despite the lack of author links! Now that I've learned more about using pipes and XML feeds, I have some ideas for other Blogger widgets too which I think will be quite useful.

      Best wishes,

      Amanda

I just wanted to let you all know that I've now written up the tutorial to explain how to filter your names from the list. Read the tutorial here.

      Hi Amanda,

Once again, great work in incorporating the step to remove the author's name.

I have a suggestion. Is it possible to include more than one name from being filtered. Right now in my pipe, I am filtering three names; my own name (Manick), my old name (Admin, earlier I used this to mask my original name) and of course, Anonymous.

Keep up the good work. Thanks.

For Manick: you could try adding an extra "&filter=Name" at the end of the URL. As far as I'm aware, this should work to remove multiple names from the widget without having to create another external pipe.

For LadyJava: Thanks for stopping by! I'm glad this widget is so useful for you and your friends :)

For Aroengbinang: Thank you for your lovely comments.

For Lordvader: I haven't used Haloscan's commenting system before, so I can't really offer much advice. It may be possible if Haloscan offer an XML/RSS feed of your recent comments, in which case you can simply replace your comments feed in the widget with the Haloscan feed instead.

For Finally Woken, Nessa and Jean Chia: Thank you all for stopping by to comment! I'm happy to know this widget is proving useful for other Bloggers.

      Best wishes to you all,

      Amanda

Hi Amanda.. sorry to bother you but can I just ask you a question. Why does the number of comments made by the commenter seems to decrease with time. The widget displayed as some of the commenter having 77 comments and sometime the next day it decrease to 70 or something.. My friends saw this as well.. I'm figuring it has something to do with the widget processing the last 500 comments.. Is this right??

Thanks so much again for this wonderful widget... and the rest of the tutorial. You're awesome :)

    • Amanda
      19 March 2008 09:38

For Lady Java: Yes, this is probably because the widget only parses the last 500 comments. Dark UFO asked me about increasing this number a while ago, though as yet I haven't had much time to look into it. As soon as I can, I'll post the details here for you both.

      Best wishes,

      Amanda

hi Amanda thakns for sharing. I also have the same sentiments with ck, and how can I filter more than 1 name?

      As I quote from you:
"For Manick: you could try adding an extra "&filter=Name" at the end of the URL. As far as I'm aware, this should work to remove multiple names from the widget without having to create another external pipe."

It's not clear were to put that "&filer=name". With your code, there's the default filer code of "&filter=name" after the &num5. So should I put the "additional" filter after the default "&filter=name"?or like what you said after the url?

i tried both and it did not work.please help me.i would highly appreciate it.

      thanks
