This weekend I noticed some interesting news in the Blogger Status blog:
Some users may be seeing star ratings on their posts without having opted in to this new feature. This is an experimental feature that was accidentally enabled on some users' blogs. We're currently working to remove star ratings on all affected blogs. In the future, you'll be able to choose to opt-in to this feature; it won't appear automatically.
I didn't notice this appearing on any of my blogs (I would have loved to see a sneak preview of this!), though I would imagine this feature will be rolled out for Blogger in Draft soon, as can be seen in this screenshot:
I can't help wondering if the Blogger team may even add more functionality to this feature once it's ready to be released properly. Perhaps this could be used as the basis for a popular posts widget (powered by Blogger rather than a third party script)..?
If you're impatient to use such functionality for your blog posts before Blogger release this, you could try the "star ratings" widget offered by Outbrain.
I'd love to know what you think about this upcoming feature for Blogger, so please feel free to leave your comments and opinions below.

I guess it can work for some blogs, especially the humor ones. Really, I don't see myself ever rating a post. When I post, I assume it's a five star, otherwise it wouldn't be there. So anything under that is a little offensive.
ReplyDeleteI'm with "om" on this one. Recently it seems like the focus of blog widgets & addons have been geared toward making money, SEO, and increasing traffic to one's site.
ReplyDeleteMost of us who have personal blogs and aren't concerned with the above may not have much use for this feature. Personally, I don't want my life to be 'rated' by my friends, family, or complete strangers.
Some Blogger addons/plugins I would be interested in are a "currently listening to" or "mood" feature...
Great job as always Amanda!
I can't see myself rating a post either. I've been on a few forums that used a rating system, and there's always the possibility for abuse.

ReplyDeleteRightly said amanda... I too had noticed same thing a few days back... and once you unchech that tick box and save... the ratings is gone.. that option disappears. SO looks like it would come when blogger fully implements it.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Amanda for this post!

ReplyDeleteYes thank for this post. read with interest and ooking forward to this feature. In the interim I shall explore outbrain...
ReplyDeleteAs a blogger on a blog with multiple authors and a variety of content, the star ratings will help us identify which topics and writing styles our readers find most interesting. Yes, one way to judge post popularity is to look at the length with which people stay on the post, or the number of visitors to the post, but this can be skewed by the subject of the writing.
ReplyDeleteFor example, our recent post on the Chinese earthquake has a lot of traffic from search engines... but perhaps our regular readers are less interested in that than they are in our feature on the mullet for charity. The star ratings will help us determine that.
Doesn't Haloscan have a similar thing already?
ReplyDeleteI can see where a blog with multiple authors would probably have a good use for a star rating system, but for me, the only author on my blog it really wouldn't serve a great purpose. I figure if my readers are going to read a post, they'll do so with or without input from a star rating.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this. I decided to use the feature...not so much to rate my writing but more so to get a feel as to what subjects and topics people are more interested in :)

It is great that they are implemented this kind of feature. I bet that it will be better that any widget and the star rating helps to know what you audience like about your post.
ReplyDeleteThank you, it's been very useful.
ReplyDeleteI'm truly grateful and really impressed.

Your blog is really helps for my search and i really like it.. Thanks a lot..:)
ReplyDeleteThe star feature is fantastic for the readers. However, not many bloggers will be comfortable with this. A lot of them might not want to have someone rate their posts. Either way, it's a good feature to have available just in case.
