26 Show labels without the post count
November 15, 2007 /

Labels are very useful to help categorize your posts, and also so readers can easily find posts they would like to read. The default "labels" widget will also show the post count beside the label name, to inform your readers how many posts are categorized under this label. However, this isn't to everyone's taste, and can also be disheartening when one of your labels only has a small post count beside it! So if you would prefer to remove the post count from your label widgets, here is a quick and easy way to remove it.

How to remove the post count from your label widget

The widget tag for the label post count is contained inside the widget template for the label widget itself. To remove the post count, we simply need to remove this widget tag.

To do this, go to Template>Edit HTML in your Blogger dashboard and ensure you have checked the "expand widget templates" box. Then you will need to locate your labels widget in the template. The easiest way to find it is to use your browser's search function and search for this partial line:

b:widget id='Label
This will easily help you locate your labels widget, even if this was not the first label widget you had installed in your template.

The whole code for the label widget will look something like this:

<b:widget id='Label1' locked='false' title='Labels' type='Label'>
<b:includable id='main'>
<b:if cond='data:title'>
<h2><data:title/></h2>
</b:if>
<div class='widget-content'>
<ul>
<b:loop values='data:labels' var='label'>
<li>
<b:if cond='data:blog.url == data:label.url'>
<data:label.name/>
<b:else/>
<a expr:href='data:label.url'><data:label.name/></a>
</b:if>
(<data:label.count/>)
</li>
</b:loop>
</ul>

<b:include name='quickedit'/>
</div>
</b:includable>
</b:widget>
I've highlighted the tag for the label post count in bold red. All you need to do is delete this line of code from your template (only the red part!) and there will no longer be a post count after each label in your list. You can preview your blog before saving to ensure the widget looks the way you had intended; if all is well, then go ahead and save your template. It really is this simple!

I hope this simple tutorial has been useful to you. I always appreciate your comments and suggestions, so please feel free to leave your comment below.

  1. Hey! Thanks for this! It's definitley something I'm going to use...
    However, how do you put the labels into a drop-down list, instead of the "list" option that Blogger gives? Because with a person with many, many labels, you simply can't use the list, and a drop-down menu makes more sense, but Blogger doesn't give you that option!

    Thanks! =D

  5. I have a question regarding labels that I can't seeem to find the answer to! Sorry this isn't altogether related to your post!

    You read that your posts 'labels' that you use within blogger, are actually technorati tags. There are the tag builders for technorati - as you mentioned on your site - but do you need to use those IF you are using the blogger tags as well? Do they both do basically the same thing?

    I was thinking if you use your standard labels within blogger - do you use your more customized labels per the subject of the post? You don't use the same labels within Technoriti, and the blogger labels right? It seems like overkill. For example, if you blog is about widgets. YOu have a label widgets in blogger. If you speak about GREEN widgets that day - use the 'widget' in blogger, and tag 'green widgets' using your technor..tag program? That way you don't have two green widget tags?! Am I making any sense? LOL!

    Is that how you can get a more standardized look for your labels within blogger?

    YEP I'm confused!

  6. Hello Hannah,

    Yes, the labels used in Blogger have the rel="tag" attribute added to the link (you can see this when you view the source code of your published blog). These tags are then picked up by Technorati and added to your blog profile to let others know what your blog is all about.

    You can also add tags per post by adding such links in the body of the post. These are not then used for your label widgets, though they will be picked up by Technorati/Del.icio.us and other services which use tags.

    I did write a post about using Technorati tags in each post which you can read here: http://www.bloggerbuster.com/2007/06/how-to-include-technorati-tags-at.html

    In some of my earliest posts here, I did add these tags to my posts, though in recent months I stopped this as it seemed to clutter up my posts (which in general are rather long!).

    It would be very useful for blogs where recognition of different subjects is needed for Technorati/Del.icio.us/etc to ensure that the label list doesn't get too long!

    Hope this helps clear things up for you :)

  7. I can't get Blogger to save once I remove that little snippet of text. It keeps giving me an error message. Does Blogger just give random errors at times, like maybe the server is too busy?

    Popular online games are commonly bound by an End User License Agreement (EULA), which establishes a limited yet definitive social order deemed necessary by the creators of the game. The consequences of breaking the agreement vary according to the contract; however range significantly from warnings to termination, such as in the 3D immersive world Second Life where a breach of contract will append the player warnings, suspension and termination depending on the offense.
    plz check it out u ll have fun...
