Free SEO stats display box - my birthday gift to you!

I discovered a free online tool which allows you to display a box like this in your blog, featuring Pagerank, Alexa, MSN, users online and many more SEO stats!

To create your own, simply visit this page on MyPagerank.net, input your website details and choose the stats you wish to display. You will then be given the Javascript code to place in an HTML/Javascript widget in your blog, as well as a preview of the widget.

As you can deduce from the title, today is my birthday. While I'd hoped to post something great for you all in honor of this day, I have to admit, this wasn't the gift I had hoped to post on site today... I had actually hoped to have the new site template ready instead, though unfortunately I came across too many setbacks and it's still not ready yet :(

The good news is that the extra time I'm taking over the design will make it even better once the whole thing is done! So far, I've created a whole new Web 2.0 style design which should load faster and be much easier to use. Tools and templates will be much easier to find than they are now, along ease of subscription, inline comments and a lack of unnecessary distractions from the content.

As soon as I've ironed out most of the kinks, I will post a preview of the new template for you all to see. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy this free SEO statistics widget instead.

Top ways to market your blog offline

You've probably read about SEO (search engine optimisation) and methods of promoting your blog online. In fact, I'm going to post about this soon, but first I want to point out some methods you may not have considered, which are just as important, whether your blog is business related, or simply a personal blog for which you would like to attract a readership: promoting your blog offline.

Before you say: "what's the point in that? Readers need to be online to read my blog!", try to realise that offline promotion can be just as effective at introducing new and regular readers to your blog as online methods. Have you visited a website because you saw it referenced in a magazine, or it was recommended by a friend? Most likely you have, or will in the future. And these are not the only ways you can promote your blog offline. Here are some more examples:

  • Word of mouth: Now you've made your blog, taken the time to create well written posts and make it look great, why not tell everyone about it? This is especially effective when speaking with people who have an affinity with your subject matter, be it your work colleagues when discussing your business blog, or parents at the local nursery when mentioning your "mommy blog"! If someone reads your blog and likes it, chances are they will also recommend it to friends and family, which can only attract more readers and page hits.
  • Business cards: Print your blog address on your business card to raise awareness of your blog. This works especially well if your blog is in the same field as your line of business. You can also try getting some cheap business cards and printing your own with a brief description of your blog. Hand them out if anyone asks about your online habits; post them on message boards and even leave a couple in libraries/coffee shops/waiting rooms for others to find.
  • Letterheads and correspondence: A similar practice to using business cards, and something you can also try with personal correspondence too.
  • Stickers and buttons: A friend of mine helped to promote her school website by handing out stickers and buttons at a summer fayre; visitor stats increased tenfold! If such promotion seems too pushy for your blog, you could instead print off some stickers with your blog address and keep them handy for an occasion where you might use them. Sticking to parcels sent for Ebay purchases is a good example (I've had many with the senders website attached). CafePress provide a great selection of stickers and buttons which you can fully customise to suit your requirements.
  • Press releases and newsletters: Over at Problogger, I read about PRWeb.com, whose free services can easily be modified to include a blog in a business press release, or even to publicise a blog in it's own right! Press releases are an ideal solution for businesses to promote their services, and also for professional bloggers. But what if you're a personal blogger? Newsletters can be a great alternative: if you blog about a group/school/organisation, or a subject which would be of interest to them, why not ask for your blog to be mentioned in a newsletter?

It's a good idea to recognise your niche in the market, and promote your blog in this area of interest. For example, if you blog about student life, try promoting your blog at local universities; if you blog about fishing, go visit your local pond and talk to others about what you do. You'll be sure to attract some interest!

For more advice about promoting your business blog offline, you should have a look at this article from the ProBlogger archives; and don't forget to read through the comments too: others have pointed out some great ideas about how they've successfully promoted their own blogs offline.

All About the New Look for Blogger Buster

First of all, I just want to say a great big THANK YOU to everyone who commented or emailed me about this new design :)

I'm really happy to know that you all enjoy this new look, and hope you'll find the site is now easier to navigate to find the information you need.

Now that the Blogger Buster makeover is almost complete, it's time to explain all the changes which I've made. Over the next few weeks I'll be writing up tutorials for most of these features, so if there's anything I've missed out be sure to let me know!

The Header Section

Many of you will recognize the overall layout of the header section from the Blogger Template Design tutorial, The Easy Way to Create a Great Blog Header.

I hope my design shows how the space in the header section can be put to good use!

The New Logo

The old BB logo didn't feature any indication of what this site is all about, so this was the first thing I redesigned!

Now it's instantly recognizable, though it still features the original red "B" which is part of the Blogger Buster "brand"!

The new font used for "Blogger Buster" is 321 Impact which you can download for free from DaFont (a great site for free fonts!)

Twitter Updates

I've recently discovered the benefits of using Twitter: not only can i keep you updated about the site, I'll be using tweets as "mini posts" to let you know of other interesting things too!

If you like, you can follow my updates on Twitter, or simply check back here to see what else I may have twittered.

Search and Navigation

The customized Blogger search box and the iconic navigation list are two features I've already posted about in the Blogger Template Design Series. Using these methods, I made these features match the overall color scheme of the site, and draw attention to important links.

Note: the "links" link is currently inactive because I haven't yet finished writing the page where this is going to lead. But it will be online and available soon. This page will be worth the wait, believe me!

The Main Posts Area

As in the previous template, the main content area has a paper style background with the page curl. But on the home page, you've probably noticed a vast difference in the overall design layout!

This is the area where I focused on creating a "magazine style" for the blog. The main thing I love about magazine styling in other (Wordpress powered) templates is the ability to have recent posts from various categories listed on the front page in grid/box areas.

I was able to recreate this in Blogger using label feeds of the main categories, which are highlighted with the sideways category titles. The "recent posts by category" section only appears on the home page (using conditional tags), along with an excerpt of the most recent post, which was achieved using the selective post summaries hack.

I would have preferred to show a different icon or small image relating to each post, though this has proven quite difficult so far. Instead I'm working on a different idea, which of course I will share if it works!

A Better Post Options Box on Item Pages

While I still use the 'post options' box on each post page, I decided it was better to add social bookmarking links here instead of the unused "Email this Post" and "Contact the Author" boxes.

New Sidebar(s)

The old style sidebar was getting too long, and the available space certainly wasn't being put to good use. So after a long time thinking about what I needed here, I decided to split the sidebar into two, while maintaining a wider section across the top which includes the most prominent features.

The "Featured Posts" Slideshow

Of all the new features I've introduced int he redesign, this is the one I love the most!

I first saw this used in Justin Tadlock's latest Wordpress theme and was instantly inspired. This "slideshow" is powered with JavaScript, rather than Flash, which ensures it's friendly to search engines. It did need a few tweaks to display properly in IE6, but it's not as difficult to use as you may think ;)

As it stands, this "widget" is coded into my actual template. It doesn't work when placed into an HTML/JavaScript widget for some reason, though by the time I come to write up the tutorial for this, I hope to have made it a little more user friendly for you all!

Do You Like The New Blogroll?

On my home page, you can now see my "blogroll": a list of the sites I read daily in regards to blogging/designing. All of these links have a recognizable icon to the left, and the links are well optimized for search engines: my way of generating a little 'link love' for these inspiring and well-written sites!

The Labels List

As part of the redesign, I have filed all the posts under a better labellings system, which should help you find posts of interest more easily. Furthermore, I've optimized these links for search engines by adding titles to the links, and styled each list item in a different way to other lists in the sidebar. You can read about the SEO for links in Blogger templates in the article I wrote for BloggingTips.com.

Feedburner Subscriber Count Widget

Here's another feature which I'm rather happy about: the widget which displays my subscriber count in the bottom of the left sidebar. The count updates daily (usually a few hours after Feedburner's update on my stats) and is generated using PHP and Javascript with a background image. It's a fairly simple widget to use, though I will warn you all in advance that you must be able to host PHP and Java scripts for this to work in your own templates.

The MyBlogLog Recent Readers Widget

Now while the new MyBlogLog widgets are lovely and shiny, they just didn't fit well with my overall theme! Using a little CSS magic, I was able to customize the original widget to better suit this site. This trick is really easy to do, and will probably be one of the first tutorials I write up (unless you have some burning questions about the other features which you'd like me to post about first?)

Known Issues

There are still a few things to finish or fix, including:

  • The "Links" link in the header navigation is currently inactive (I haven't finished writing the page for this yet!)
  • Both the Templates and Tutorials links in the header will soon lead to seperate resource pages, where all tools and templates will be listed on a single page.
  • In Netscape 6, the footer sections may slip beneath the sidebar, which shall be solved as soon as I can figure out the problem (thanks to Kit for pointing this out!)

I'll solve these issues as soon as I can. In the meantime, if you notice any other problems with the site, please let me know about them!

So What's Next?

Over the next few weeks, I'll be posting about all of the features above as part of the Blogger Template Design series so be sure to subscribe to the feed if you're interested in using these techniques in your own Blogger templates!

Should I create a Magazine Style Blogger template for download?

This is something I've been mulling over for a while now. I'd love to offer a free magazine style theme for Blogger, but like all Wordpress themes of this type, anyone downloading and using such a theme would need to do a huge amount of customization for themselves. It's simply not possible to create one which will work right out of the box!

So let me know what YOU think! Are there many who would be willing to go into the template code, change certain settings and (perhaps) learn how to write their posts a little differently for the sake of a magazine style theme? If enough people ask me for this, I will be sure to create one, though this may well take me a couple of weeks to write up!

I hope you've enjoyed reading how I've created this new template. If there's anything I haven't covered here, or a particular feature you'd like me to write about first, be sure to let me know by leaving your comments below.

Change the Title Tags for your Blog

Until recently, the title tags generated for each page of your Blogger blog would display the blog title first, then the name of your post.

This wasn't so good for SEO (search engine optimization) as this made keywords from your post titles appear after your blog title.

Luckily, Blogger have come up with a simple fix for this problem for those who use Layouts templates: the <data:blog.pageName/> tag!

This new tag is already installed for new blogs (or if you change your existing template to one of Blogger's default ones).

However, if you have customized your template or uploaded a third party template, you will need to change the original <data:blog.pageTitle/> to the new <data:blog.pageName/> tag for this change to take effect.

But don't worry: this is REALLY easy! Here's what you have to do:

  1. Go to Layout>edit HTML in your Blogger dashboard.
  2. Search for this tag: <data:blog.pageTitle/>
  3. Replace this tag with the following:
    <b:if cond='data:blog.pageType == &quot;index&quot;'>
    <title><data:blog.title/></title>
    <b:else/>
    <title><data:blog.pageName/></title>
    </b:if>
  4. Save your template! (See, this is an easy hack!)

Once you've changed this tag, you'll see that on post pages, the default [blog name] page title format for your post titles in the browser window will be replaced solely by your post title instead.

This will increase the chances of your posts being picked up in search engine results for keywords which appear in your post titles (and can ultimately help draw more targeted traffic to your blog.

I hope this little trick will be useful to you all! And for the Blogger team (if you're reading this): Thank you!

Frequently Asked Questions

Need to know something about the site? This section answers the most frequently asked questions about Blogger Buster to help you understand how this site works, and where you can find the information you need:

Q Where can I find a new template for my blog?

A There is a great selection of free Blogger layouts templates for you to download. The Templates link in the red navigation bar near the top of the page will lead you to a complete list of the templates available for download on the site. Alternatively, you can browse the Free Blogger Templates category by clicking through the link in the sidebar to read about all of the different templates available both from Blogger Buster and from other sites on the web.

QHow can I find a post about ______ ?

AThe easiest way to find a post about your particular question is to use the search box found in the header section. Try using a few different keywords related to your question in your searches which will help you find articles of interest more easily.

You may also like to browse the categories which are listed in the sidebar to the right. For example, if you need help customizing your Blogger template, you should look in the "Customize Your Blogger Template" category, while all posts related to increasing traffic to your blog will be in the SEO and Blog Traffic category.

QI can't find the answer to my question!

AIf you can't find a post to answer your Blogger related questions, feel free to send me your question in an email. I may be able to answer your question right away, or could write a post about this in the future.

QDo you offer a custom blog design service?

ANot at the moment, though in the near future I will be introducing a premium service for unique Blogger template designs. Feel free to email me if you'd like more information about this.

QWhat is the "Updates Via Twitter" thing in the header section?

ATwitter is a free "social networking" service which thousands of people use to keep their friends updated on what they're doing at the moment.

I use Twitter as a means of keeping readers updated about what's going on in the site, and also to offer Blogger news, useful links and other tidbits which I think may be useful to other Bloggers.

You can read more about Twitter and how it can be used on the Twitter information page. If you'd like to receive "tweets" about Blogger Buster, you may want to follow me on Twitter.

QHow can I get updates about new articles when they are published?

AYou can "subscribe" to Blogger Buster to receive news of updates to the site as they are published. There are two different ways you can subscribe: by RSS (in a feed reader) or by signing up for email updates. You can find links to both of these subscription methods in the red navigation bar near the top of the page.

Both of these subscription methods are explained in full on the Subscription Page.

QWhat is the "Recent Readers widget?

AThis widget displays the avatars of recent visitors who are members of the MyBlogLog community, and each avatar links to the member's own profile page which is hosted on the MyBlogLog website.

MyBlogLog can help you build a community around your blog, find other members who are interested in the same things as you, and is a great social networking tool for bloggers.

You can learn more about MyBlogLog by visiting the site, and may also be interested in joining the Blogger Buster community to interact with myself and other people who are interested in using Blogger.

QWhat is "Entrecard"?

AEntrecard is a new phenomenon in the blogging world which allows bloggers and webmasters to advertise on each other's blogs, interact and build relationships with each other, and find other sites of interest to them. "Entrecards" are a little bit like business cards: you can "drop" you card on other blogs (like this one) which can encourage the author to come and visit your site.

Using Entrecard, you can earn points which you may use to purchase ads and other services too.

If you would like to learn more about Entrecard, take a look at the information page on the Entrecard website.

Weekly Review #8

Oh my, what an exciting week this has been for the Blogger community! Google have pulled a really great new tool out of the hat which will be very useful for Blogger members, while I have been working on a complete overhaul of this site, which I plan to unveil in the next few days...

In fact, I'm so busy writing about these new developments that I will have to keep this Weekly review relatively short. The good news is that in the next few days you'll be seeing complete posts about these developments, so keep your eyes peeled for updates which will appear very soon.

Blogger Buster news

Guest posting at BloggingTips.com

Regular readers of BloggingTips.com may have noticed my guest post: 40+ Essential Tools for Google Blogger, which was published late last Sunday. This post is a resource list for Blogger users which features some of the best tools and resources available to help you build a better blog.

As the name suggests, Blogging Tips is a resource for bloggers in general, featuring articles about blog development, design, SEO, marketing and so much more!

Please do pop by to take a look at my resource list for Google Blogger, and also the other great posts written by the more regular members of the Blogging Tips team.

I do hope to become a regular writer on Blogging Tips where I'll be writing about Google Blogger and general blog design. My next post is (probably) due in the next couple of days, and once I have clarification, I'll be sure to let you all know about my posting slot!

Blogger Buster redesign

I'm in the process of giving Blogger Buster a whole new makeover. Not simply a new design, this is intended to make more positive changes to the way this site can be used, including:

  • Easier navigation for access to posts, resources and templates
  • Search engine optimization and better overall ranking for the site
  • Better organization for labeling, searching and archives to ensure readers are easily able to locate the content they need.

I will post about the changes more fully before the new changes take full effect, and I would greatly appreciate any suggestions you may have about how this site could be improved!

Blogger News

As I hinted in the introduction to this post, Google have developed a really great new tool which can be used for free in our Blogger blogs!

Grandcentral is a free new service from Google which allows you to receive calls and post voice mails directly on your blog!

For me, this is a revolutionary method for blog authors to interact with their readers, and foresee this will be a highly useful tool for many blog authors to implement.

At present, Grandcentral is in beta testing mode, though Blogger users are able to sign up to begin using this free service right away.

I will post about this more fully once I've had the time to research and test this new product, and will let you know more about it then (though for many reasons, I doubt I will implement this into Blogger Buster).

This week's links

Here's a handful of my favorite posts and links related to blogging for this week. I'm sure you'll understand why this one is a little short when you see the new site design ;)

  • 40+ Top blogs which will teach you to blog like a pro! ProBloggersMatrix has created a truly inspirational list of must read blogs for aspiring bloggers.
  • A comprehensive guide to keyword research for bloggers : this is a great, though somewhat lengthy article which has been published for free by CopyBlogger. Find out how keyword research affects your blog's status in search engines, and learn how to improve this by reading your free comprehensive guide.
  • Prioritize your blog into 5 distinct groups: This article by ProBlogDesign has been invaluable to me whilst working on the makeover for Blogger Buster. If you're interested in the design and layout of your blog, this really is a "must read" which will provide much food for thought.
  • 9 Things that drive a blogger crazy! Skelliewag has become a must read blog for me, and as always, this is an excellent post which delivers the best advice about blogging. In this post, Skellie tackles nine blogging events which can drive us crazy if not approached in the right way. (Number 2 was particularly relevant for me when I noticed my subscribers had dropped to almost half! Temporarily though, thank goodness!)

I hope you've enjoyed this somewhat shorter Weekly Review. Please do subscribe to the feed to ensure you're kept up to date with the developments here over the next few days. I promise you'll be in for a very pleasant surprise...

Blogger Wishlist Competition Update: What you could win!

Blogger Buster is holding its first competition where you could win the ultimate blogging package by telling us what features you would most like to use in Blogger.

To enter this competition and participate in a community project, please read the original competition post and ensure you validate your entry!

In this post, you can read more about the prizes on offer in this competition, along with some ideas for your own entry based on what others have posted so far.

About the competition

This competition has been launched in celebration of Blogger Buster's first birthday, and is part of a community project to raise awareness of the features which we (the Blogger community) would most like to use in Blogger.

For the chance to win the ultimate blogging package or one of five runner up prizes (see below), you will need to write a post explaining the feature(s) you would most like Blogger to add, then post a comment on the competition page with a link to your entry post.

Be sure to read the entry requirements and rules on the original competition page, and post your entries there!

First Prize: The Ultimate Blogging Package

The main prize on offer in this competition is The Ultimate Blogging Package: a selection of useful products which I have hand picked as the most useful products and services which are tailored to the needs of Blogger users.

The Ultimate Blogging Package includes:

  • A unique, professional Blogger template (which will not be available for public download)
  • A copy of the Problogger book
  • A complete blog tune up
  • One year domain name, email address and basic hosting package from GoDaddy
  • A set of Moo Mini-Cards
  • A one month 125px advertising slot here on Blogger Buster

Here follows a full description of each element in the package:

The Unique Blogger Template

I have designed a unique Blogger template as part of the main prize:

This is one of the best templates I have ever designed! It is based on a new design concept I've been working on for Blogger Buster (more news about this in coming weeks) so you can be sure it is optimized for SEO, loads very quickly and has loads of other great features including built in tabbed navigation (I finally figured out the method!).

This design will only be available to the first prize winner of this competition. It will not be released as a download here at Blogger Buster (either free or paid).

As an extra benefit to the prize winner, I will personally install this template in their blog.

In the event that the winner does not require use of this template for their own blog, the winner will still receive the copyright for this template and are permitted to offer this as a download from their own blog instead. However, I will only install this template into a blog owned or operated by the prize winner themselves.

A complete blog tune up

To complement the Blogger template offered to the winner, I will also provide them with a tune-up for their blog which will further optimize their blog for search engines and ensure it loads as quickly as possible.

This part of the prize is not transferable, and will be provided only to the first prize winner.

A one year domain name from GoDaddy (Includes basic hosting and email)

Blogger users can associate a custom domain (eg: www.yourname.com) with their blog. A domain name purchased directly from GoDaddy comes complete with a basic hosting and email package, allowing extra flexibility for bloggers who need online storage for their images and scripts, and also a professional email address.

The winner of the ultimate blogging package will receive a voucher to purchase the domain name of their choice (.com, .org, .net only), and if required I will help set up their custom domain, hosting and email account (not transferable).

You can read full details of the domain package here.

A copy of the Problogger book

ProBlogger the book is an excellent resource for learning how to build and monetize a successful blog.

Written by Darren Rowse (ProBlogger.net) and Chris Garrett (ChrisG.com), this book is a bestseller of the blogging genre and has received excellent reviews.

Unlike other books that are big on potential and theory, ProBlogger provides results based on the authors own experience of what really works through practical, tried and tested advice.

No matter which genre you write about through your blog, this is an essential book for your reading list!

A pack of 100 Moo Mini Cards

Moo Mini-Cards are a fun and practical way to promote your blog offline. Unlike regular business cards, you can personalize each Moo card in your pack using pre-made templates or your own designs.

This prize includes international shipping, and details will be sent to the winner in the form of a voucher to redeem at Moo.com.

A one month 125px advertising slot here on Blogger Buster

The first prize winner will also win one month's free advertising here on Blogger Buster in the form of a 125px square ad at the top of the sidebar to assist in promoting their blog (worth $30).

5 Runner Up Prizes

As the winners will be drawn purely by luck, I felt it was only fair to offer a small selection of runner up prizes too. So in addition to the ultimate blogging package, five runners up will win:

500 Entrecard Credits

Entrecard is a new and highly useful social network which allows members to earn points which can be used to advertise for free on other members' blogs.

Each runner up will receive 500 Entrecard credits transferred to their account to help towards advertising on other blogs in the network.

One month 30px square advertising slot on Blogger Buster

Each of the five runners up will also receive a one month advertising slot in one of the new 30px square slots which I've introduced to the site.

These slots are currently available through BuySellAds for $10 per month; the size of these ads is similar to a large Favicon and link to your blog (or a page within your blog) using title tags to explain what your site is about.

Ideas submitted so far

If you're looking for ideas for your own entry post to this competition, why not take a look at some of the entries already posted? So far we've seen some really great suggestions, including:

  • The ability to upload images and have them display without size modification (from Theresa of Eyebald)
  • A comment form beneath posts (from Kazi of Free Software for PC)
  • Tabbed navigation built into Blogger templates (from Fernandoo of Randomness)
  • A (purely comical value) instant coffee machine! Thanks to La Blogueria for that one, which really made me smile :D

Your feature suggestion need not be unique! Through this project we are trying to encourage the Blogger team to develop the features which we would find most useful. Writing about these suggestions and promoting through this community project is more likely to make Blogger take notice of our needs and work towards developing these features which can only benefit the community as a whole.

My hope is that the prizes offered through this competition will offer you all more incentive to join in!

How the winners will be chosen

As explained on the main competition page, entrants should write a post on their own blogs about the feature they would most like to use in Blogger. To verify their entry, a comment including the link to their blog post should be made on the competition page.

The competition closes on Friday the 4th of July at 10pm, GMT. Winners will be drawn at random soon after the competition closes using Research Randomizer, with one draw to determine the overall winner and a separate draw for the five runners up.

Winners will first be contacted about their prize and announced later in a follow-up post.

Please be sure to read the full details (including the competition rules) on the main competition page. Entries should be submitted on the competition page only to ensure your entries are verified and included in the draws. Please do not add your entry URL on this page as your entry will not be counted!

Best of luck to you all!

Just to confirm some of the questions asked by readers:

  • Your entry can be in any language, and will be accepted so long as it follows the rules of entry!
  • You must provide a link to your entry post by leaving this in a comment on the main competition page!

Don't forget, this competition closes on Friday the 4th of July at 10pm GMT so be sure to validate your entries before this time!

I wish you all the best of luck for this competition, and look forward to reading more entry posts!

Weekly Review #9

I hope you all like the new look for Blogger Buster! Over the past couple of days, I've been ironing out the glitches in the template and have changed a few other things which you can read about below.

This week, I've discovered some really useful tools and resources for Blogger. I've also begun writing up tutorials about various aspects of the new design to help you recreate similar effects in your own Blogger templates.

Blogger Buster News

Of course, the big news for the site this week is the new template design. If you're reading this post via RSS I would really recommend for you to visit the site to take a look at how much Blogger Buster has changed!

There were a few glitches in the template, though hopefully these are all now fixed.

I've added a couple of new features in the past few days including:

  • A tour of the site for new visitors, which gives an overview of Blogger Buster and explains some of the major features of the new template. You can find a link to this in the navigation bar beneath the search box, and also on item pages.
  • The Home Page has changed a little to ensure there isn't such a great gap between the bottom of the page and the footer sections (thanks for the suggestion Dr Wiz!)

The "links" page is still inactive as I'm still in the process of writing this up. Eventually, this will be a resource page full of useful links related to Blogger, blogging and template design which should be available midweek.

As you may have noticed, all templates and tools are now accessible through the home page and are contained within this area of the site. The original sections for templates (http://designs.bloggerbuster.com) and tools (http://tools.bloggerbuster.com) are still available if you wish to use them, but will no longer be updated and will eventually be depreciated as everyone updates their bookmarks to the new locations for these features.

SEO for Blogger Templates series

Over at Blogging Tips I've been writing about search engine optimization techniques for Blogger templates. The first and second posts are available for you to read right now, while the third in this series will be available tomorrow.

I'm happy to say that I'm now a regular writer for Blogging Tips, and will be posting about Blogger and blog template design each Monday from now on.

Blogging Tips is full of useful articles and ideas for bloggers and has a great writing team, so please pop over sometime to read what this site has to offer the blogging community.

Upcoming Articles

Those of you who have kept up with me on Twitter may be wondering about the tool I've been using to backup, restore and import Wordpress posts to Blogger... This post is currently in the pipeline and will be posted in the next day or two.

Also, I will continue to write tutorial posts explaining how to install and use the new features included in this template.

I do apologize for not having written anything for the Blogger Template Design series recently. I'm sure you all understand how busy I've been with the redesign and other projects, and can assure you that this series will continue with at least two posts over the coming week.

Blogger News and Issues

Did anyone else notice the bug with all Blogger powered blogs yesterday? For a while, all blogs hosted by Blogger seemed to load extremely slowly, or wouldn't load at all! Thankfully, the Blogger team were on the case within minutes and had soon sorted out the problem for us all, and by now everyone's blog should load just fine.

The problems people were experiencing with custom domains earlier this week have also been resolved. If you were experiencing problems establishing your custom domain, you can try again now as everything seems to be working just fine.

This Week's Links

Here's a selection of the sites and articles I've been reading this past week:

  • Vote for Blogger! Blogger has been nominated for "Best Publishing and Photography" site in the 2008 Webware awards.

Voting is open until the 31st of March and winners will be announced in April 21st.
  • ShareThis Plugin for Blogger: The popular service, ShareThis has now created a widget style plugin for Blogger users. This will add a ShareThis icon to your posts which allows readers to easily add your posts to their favorite social bookmarking service or email complete posts to their friends.

You can also use this widget to receive detailed statistics about the performance of both the widget and your blog in general.
  • Smashing Blog Headers: Smashing Magazine has some truly awesome blog headers available for free download, which have been offered by creative readers of this site. There are some real beauties here, so if you need a new header image for your blog, be sure to check out this selection.
  • Building a Page for First Timers: This excellent post by ProBlogDesign is what inspired me to write the "Tour" page for Blogger Buster. In this article, Michael Martin explains how to write a page specifically for new visitors and why such a tactic can be effective for your blog. This is really worth a read and may even inspire you to create your own!

I hope you have enjoyed this week's review. Be sure to let me know if you have any suggestions for next week, and feel free to leave your comments and opinions below.

Optimizing a blog for search engines - Reader's Question

Last week, I received a heartfelt email from the Chuck Porter who writes "Sarah's Progress in Her Battle with Hemangiomas": a blog about the progress of baby Sarah's condition, which her family hope may also become a resource for other concerned parents researching infant Hemangiomas.

Chuck asked:

How can I make my site Google Searchable for Hemangiomas?
With Chuck's permission, I decided to make a case study of how Sarah's Progress could be optimized for search engines. Although this case study is written with particular regard to the keyword "Hemangiomas", you'll find many of the tips detailed here are appropriate for any niche blog.

First thoughts about optimizing this blog for search engines

For any new blog or website, it does take time and effort to be indexed by all major search engines, and have content feature in search results.

There is the motto among bloggers that "content is king", meaning that great writing above all else is the key to creating a successful and widely respected blog. My belief is this: while great content is vastly important, you won't get visitors to your blog is people are unable to find it!

So in this article, I'll explore methods of ensuring search engines and other referrers are better able to provide links to Chuck's blog, which consequently will result in more visitors, links to the site and a better ranking in search engine results.

Sarah's Progress is a niche blog: this means that the blog focuses on a particular subject, rather than a more general subject. It focuses most specifically on infant Hemangiomas (Sarah's condition) rather than the broader (general) subject of medical conditions.

Niche blogs, especially those writing about a very particular subject matter, are more easily promoted than blogs of a more general subject. They are more likely to feature higher in the rankings of search results too, providing that the blog is optimized for search engine spiders.

About search engine spiders

Search engine spiders are essentially software "robots" which crawl the internet, reading text and following links in web and blog pages to gather information for search engine databases.

Search engine spiders don't read web pages the same way as we do, they only read the code. Imagine what your blog would look like with no color, style or images and you'll get a better idea of what search engine spiders will see.

Optimizing the code of Sarah's Progress for search engines

In my initial reply to Chuck's email, I explained that "keyword density" is one established method of search engine optimization. Keyword density means using words related to the niche subject of a blog in many different areas of the blog and throughout blog posts. Search engine spiders can read textual content, so if the word "Hemangiomas" is referenced at key points in the blog and blog posts, search engine spiders will reference that the blog is related to the keyword's subject.

For Sarah's Progress, I recommended to Chuck that the word "Hemangiomas" should be referenced in:

  • The blog title
  • The description text
  • Frequently in the titles of blog posts
  • At points throughout each blog post

So far, Chuck has done a great job of ensuring "Hemangiomas" is indexed as a keyword in this blog, as you can see in the image below:

I have highlighted where Chuck has used this keyword in high focus areas of the blog, where search engine spiders are most likely to read this text.

It is possible to "spam" search engines by making a post too dense of such keywords, but by referencing "Hemangiomas" in each of the areas highlighted above, Chuck seems to have provided sufficient keyword density for Sarah's Progress without being spammy, and also ensured the blog is reader-friendly!

Related keywords and phrases such as "birthmarks", "blood vessels", "port wine" and "tumor" are also keywords which Chuck should try to use in posts too, as people searching for references to Hemangiomas may also search about these too.

Optimizing images for search engines

A lesser know technique of search engine optimization is to ensure images are SEO friendly. As search engine spiders cannot see the actual images (they can only read code), it would be advisable to use alternative text and titles.

Alternative text ("alt" text) is what would be displayed in place of images if the browser does not display images. Image titles are the title of the image itself.

When using the rich text editor to write posts in Blogger, the "Alt" and "Title" properties of images we upload are not visible. To add these properties to an image, we need to switch to "Edit HTML" mode instead.

Once we have uploaded an image to our blog posts, a section of code like this will be visible in Edit HTML mode:

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_xn2gmPb9TfM/R6ox_I747OI/AAAAAAAAA3s/lSjN28USZWE/s1600-h/DSC01520.jpg"><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_xn2gmPb9TfM/R6ox_I747OI/AAAAAAAAA3s/lSjN28USZWE/s400/DSC01520.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5163994883533892834" /></a>
This code references the image which is displayed in the post, and links this to the original image where it is hosted by Blogger.

In the example above, I have highlighted the "alt" section in red. Currently there is no alternative text for this image, as this would normally display between the speech marks. You can add alternative text by inserting this between the speech marks, like this:

alt="A picture of Sarah"
In addition, I would advise Chuck to add the title of the image, by adding this just after the alternative text, like this:
alt="A picture of Sarah" title="Sarah's Hemangiomas ulcerations"

A picture of Sarah soon after she was bornThe resulting image would then be more useful to search engine spiders, as this would feature code readable information about the image. As an example, hover your cursor over this image, where the the image title will be displayed. If you were to view this page with images turned off in your browser, you would see the alternative text for this image instead.

Optimizing links for search engines

Links too can be optimized to help search engine spiders better understand their relevance and reference to the content.

Firstly, it is important to use descriptive keywords in the link text.

Chuck hopes that the Sarah's Progress blog will help lead other concerned parents to Dr. Waner and his Vascular Birthmark Institute who have helped Sarah and her family understand and treat her condition. When linking to the Vascular Birthmark Institute's website or other sites of interest, it would be much more effective to use link text like this:

Please visit the Vascular Birthmark Institute website for information and support about Hemangiomas
than by linking as
You can visit the Vascular Birthmark Institute website here:http://www.birthmark.org/
.

The first example will tell search engine spiders much more about the link, as it includes the title and other descriptive keywords in the link text. The second example gives no other information than the link itself.

Search engines look more kindly on sites which offer information about the sites they link to, and such sites rank much higher in search engine results.

Off-blog methods of optimizing the blog for search engines

Now that we have looked at ways of optimizing the code and content for search engine spiders, we need to understand some of the ways to get recognition and authority for this site.

Most search engines will display search results in order of authority. This means that the most authoritative web pages for given searches will be displayed first in the results pages.

A key factor in search engine ranking is how many other pages link to your web page. A link to a website or post page from another source is like a vote of confidence in the content featured on that page.

Sarah's Progress is a relatively new blog, so I was not too surprised to see no incoming links when I searched for links to the site in Google (using this search phrase link:http://porkchopsarah.blogspot.com/).

In order to achieve some authority in search engine rankings, I would advise Chuck to try and get some incoming links pointing to the Sarah's Progress blog.

Chuck has already submitted the site to the parents' directory in the Vascular Birthmark Foundation, but there are many other options the family could use to acquire some more incoming links, such as:

  • Search for relevant blogs, leave comments and offer reciprocal links (or ask for a link back).

By performing a blog search for Hemangioma, I discovered several other blogs which would be relevant to the Sarah's Progress blog. Leaving comments on similar blogs with a link back to Sarah's Progress will help others find this blog, while reciprocal links in the sidebar will ensure search engine spiders follow the link and receive the "vote of confidence" in this site.
  • Find forums and message boards relevant to your niche subject, and become active in these too. The Vascular Birthmark Foundation discussion forum would be a great place for Chuck to start. He may want to consider adding a link in the forum signature, which could also be indexed by search engines, and provide other readers with a reference site.
  • Submit the blog to DMOZ: this was one of my first suggestions to Chuck, as DMOZ is a highly valued directory of websites (edited by real people) and would certainly help the blog be indexed more quickly.
  • Submit the blog URL to Google, Yahoo! and other search engines for indexing. Blogs and new websites will eventually be indexed by search engine spiders, but submitting links manually can help this happen more quickly.
  • Submit to blog directories too! This can be a very time consuming task, though it is certainly worth the effort. I noticed this blog was indexed more quickly than my other blogs as I had submitted to blog directories soon after creating this site.
I would advise against paying fees for submission to search engines and directories, as all such submissions could be done for free with just a little time and effort. Personally, I think such schemes are a waste of money, and often false in the indexing claims they make.

Miscellaneous advice

I have a few more snippets of advice for Chuck which may well help Sarah's Progress to be a more resourceful blog which ranks higher in search engine results. These ideas are more time consuming than the others discussed above, though if completed over time these could become valuable assets for the blog.

Write some resource posts for other parents

Many visitors to the Sarah's Progress blog will be other parents seeking advice, information and support about Hemangiomas. If Chuck and the family could write some resourceful posts for other parents based on their own experiences, this would add a great deal of value to the site, and would almost certainly result in backlinks from other blogs and sites.

Such post titles could include:

  • What to do when your child is diagnosed with Hemangiomas
  • Useful resources for infant Hemangiomas
  • Methods of treatment for infant Hemangiomas

It would be a pleasant experience for readers to learn of the personal experiences of Sarah's family when reading such articles, especially when so many sites referencing Hemangiomas are clinically based. By writing of their own experiences on the blog, Chuck and his family would be able to develop a stronger readership, as well as providing a useful and informative site.

Rewrite some great posts, include backlinks to the blog and submit these to article banks

There are many article banks which you can submit your own content to. These articles are then used by others for their own blogs and publications (including a link back to the author's website). By including backlinks in such articles (links back to your own blog) you can acquire more authority for your own posts. Rewriting posts, rather than submitting the exact content you have published in your blog, is essential: search engines frown on duplicate content which weakens the authority of your own blog pages.

Here is a great resource list of article banks you can submit to if you choose to use this method.

Promote offline too!

An easy way to attract readers to your blog is to tell others about it in person! Business cards featuring your blog URL are one tried and tested method (you can get 250 business cards for free from Vistaprint or Ooprint, and only pay for postage). Also, never underestimate the power of "word of mouth".

Chuck is obviously very enthusiastic about the blog, and I would imagine that he and his family are already telling others about their online diary of Sarah's progress. For other bloggers though, this is often a promotional technique which is overlooked.

Your thoughts?

I hope I have provided Chuck and his family with a useful guide to the basics of search engine optimization for Sarah's Progress in her Battle with Hemangiomas, though I am sure any other advice offered by readers of Blogger Buster would also be appreciated. So if you have any further ideas which could help this blog feature more highly in search engine results, please pop over to the Sarah's Progress blog or leave your comments below.
