68 Better Post Previews - See how your post will look to readers

After a hardworking weekend, I found an awesome treat in my feed reader this morning! Blogger in Draft today published details of the enhancements to the post preview feature of our blogs which enables us to see how our posts will look to readers:



Up until now, when we preview a post we are writing for our Blogger powered blogs, we have seen only a white, format-less version of our musings, with none of the formatting and visual style which is added by our template and CSS.

With this new feature in place, we can see preview exactly what the post will look like when published, including any style attributes generated by our template code.


How it works



The updated post preview feature is available to those using Blogger in Draft to publish their posts, though as it seems to be working well for everyone so far I imagine it will become available to those using the regular editor soon enough.

This enhancement works similarly to the preview system offered by the Edit HTML template editor; rather than have a pop-up display, the preview is generated in a new browser tab (or page, depending on which browser you are using). Simply click the "Preview" button, which now appears beneath the post editing section to see this new feature in action:

I find this particularly useful when deciding which size of images to use in my blog posts as I can see exactly how the post will be formatted when the style generated by my templates is applied.

This works even with an immensely customized template such as mine. It's seamless and works beautifully right out of the box, and is a welcome addition to the series of enhancements we've seen the Blogger team push through over the past few months.

A note for Blogger hackers:

The only possible problem you may face when using this feature is if you customize the display of posts on the home page (for example, if you use conditional tags to add content/alter the layout of posts as I do for Blogger Buster).

As the post preview works in the same way as the template preview, you will see how your post would appear on the home page of your site, not on an individual item page. So if your template features customizations which affect the display of posts, you may not be able to see properly how your post will be formatted.

For most Blogger users, this will pose no issues at all.

  2. My favorite of all my blogs is still at Blogger. I love the simplicity of Blogger, even though I know the rest of the writing world is just wild over Wordpress. I'm one of those writers/readers who believes 'content is king'. I can look past the minimalist look of a page and find the meat of the matter. I'm very excited about this new development. I haven't used it yet, but I'm definitely going to check it out. Thanks for the heads up.

  4. It doesn't display a "jump break" if you use one. On the other hand when I tested this I did notice that the break no longer appears AFTER "LinkWithin" which was why I hadn't been using this long awaited feature.

  5. I would love to see how my "read more" looks to readers - that drives me nuts. I also have a problem with creating captions for pictures. I would make the text smaller and italicize,and after the first picture Blogger starts inserting extra close span code so that all the pictures appear on my condensed post. I stopped making captions because it was too time intensive to clean this up. The screw up also does not appear in my preview, so I no longer felt comfortable scheduling a picture/caption intensive post in advance. If I missed one extra piece of code than it was really making by blog look sloppy. Kind of a pain!

  7. I've been using Windows Livewriter to post my blogs (which I haven't had a chance to update in eons) and have, therefore, had no problems with my post preview. Is see it how it will look on the post page. The only problem is that, as Anara noted, I don't see how the "read more" will look. This is why I keep a test blog that is identical to my real blog so I can double check the spacing of the read more paragraph breaks before committing a post to the real blog.

    Still, I'm stoked that draft is adding this feature. My blog template is customized to holy heck and back but I realize most people's aren't and this will likely be very handy for them.

  16. Awesome! This is just what I am wanting to have on my blog. It's kinda odd to publish a blog and doesn't have a clue what it would look like to your readers. I was even sending the link to my friends and ask them how it looks like. But with this, TWO THUMBS UP!

  19. I forgot to mention that Windows Livewriter is freeware. And it comes without any Microshaft tech problems that I've found. So if the new feature isn't working for you, you might give that program a try.

  24. This is one of the things I never had to deal with for Wordpress. Another way to get nice previews for Blogger is to use Windows Live Writer connected to your Blogger blog and it can do previews as well.

  59. From what I can tell, the way to customize the appearance is to add the class prefix ".mobile " to additional style statements in order to customize the appearance in mobile browsers. Not had time to try it much yet, but will do my best over the holidays so I can write up a post.
