339 Issues with the embedded comment form?

Yesterday a few readers emailed me to explain that there were issues with Blogger's embedded comment form.

The issue was that the "Comment as" drop down menu was empty, preventing readers from choosing an identity for their comments which in turn prevented comments from being left.

As yet, the Blogger team have not acknowledged this issue on the Known Issues (or any other blog), and as far as we can tell, the problem should now be resolved. It could have been a browser-related issue, or perhaps Blogger was making some improvements to the embedded comment form which caused this temporary glitch?

Software Testing Zone wrote about this issue in detail, and has since updated this post to explain that this issue appears to have been resolved. I personally did not experience any problems with the embedded comment form for any of the Blogger blogs I viewed over the past few days, but I am interested to learn more about this issue in case something similar happens in the future.

For anyone still experiencing this problem when reading Blogger powered blogs, try refreshing your browser (press F5 for most browsers, which completely refreshed the page), or clear cookies and temporary internet files to ensure you have a fresh version of the page.

If you were affected by issues with the embedded comment form, please do leave a comment below with some information, such as the browser you were using (Firefox, IE6/7, Safari), whether the blog was using a custom domain or a customized template, etc.

  5. Ya..It happened with me also many times..This is basically due the the fact that the blog didn't loaded up completely and also some cookie problem.

    For this Just refresh the page and comment..

    Also don't stop the page which is still loading otherwise u will face the same problem.

  6. Just been through this one. I do have a custom domain and a custom template. After numerous readers alerted me through email that they were unable to comment, I ultimately switched back to the pop-up window and readers were able to comment again. That way, readers didn't have to figure out how to refresh, etc.

  7. I had this problem with my blog on Tuesday and Wednesday. I tried switching to a different comment option, then switching back...no change. So I just switched my comments to the pop-up box option and the comments worked.

    I'm using IE 7, blogger domain, and a custom template.

  8. I certainly had the problem but not in all of my blogs; one of them remained fine. It had nothing to do with the code, since I copied and pasted the comment form code from the blog that was working into the ones that weren't and nothing happened.

    Didn't have to do with templates either, since I saw blogs with default blogger templates that weren't working and also blogs with highly customized templates that worked fine.

    I heard it had something to do with an archive that wasn't working properly in the frame or something like that.

    By now it's working fine, I do hope it will last!

  10. I had this issue in all the blogs I customed (5 different blogs). It's working properly now, as you said.

  11. I had the problem for several days with no problems. Commenting on blogger is pretty poor. The dropdown box is confusing to many people, so this just gave me a good excuse to switch my commenting system over to disqus. I had no problems making the switch and no my readers have a ton of new options. I wish I would have switched sooner. It bothers me that blogger never acknowledged they even had a problem. Please be more responsive to your users. You can search the google groups and find reports of this problem everywhere.

  13. I have the problem also - I had to change my settings from embedded comments to open in a pop up window. All of my users experienced the problem, both Firefox and Google Users.

    I have a heavily customized blogger template, which I read on a forum might be the problem.

    Very frustrating to go to the Blogger site and see that it was not acknowledged.

    First of all thanks for mentioning my post regarding the Blogger's Embedded Comment issue (that appears to have been resolved now).

    Being a Software Tester by profession, I can tell that this issue was real and was not a browser, resolution, or cookie related problem! Those are potential reasons to cause such issues, but not in this case. I had tested this issue with all possible scenarios and it appeared that it was happening due to partial loading of http://www.blogger.com/jsbin/1858126393-cmt.js file from Blogger's server. So it was more of a server side issue rather than a client side one (browser, cookie etc). More details are updated in my blog post.

    Anyway, now that this appears to have been resolved silently, it comes as a great relief. Once again thanks for the link love. Happy Blogging. :)

  15. I had the problem with my blog on Wednesday. I have a regular blogger template, but I have customized it by adding an extra column. Refreshing didn't help so I switched to the old comment form and it worked. I've been scared to switch back yet, but I guess I should give it a try.

  18. Thanks for posting this, the issue did exist a friend e-mail me and told me about it. Blogger should have been aware of this it is very widespread, I checked it with firefox 3 and also IE-8 beta 2, with the same result I had to implement either the full page or pop-up window for comments to work.

  19. I'm having a problem with this. When I have the comments embedded which I think is the most nice-looking, nothing happens when clicking the "post a comment" link. If it isn't worked out I may move my blog somewhere else because the main reason I left Xanga was that anyone would be able to leave comments without signing up, and for the customizable templates (also for the lack of ads).

  21. Hi Amanda, I am actually one of the few who emailed you with regards to this concern. I am experiencing this problem until now. I switch to Pop-Up Comment Form for my readers to post a comment but I think it is really an inconvenient type of commenting since some doesn't want pop-ups on their computers. I just hope you can help me with this. I am using Firefox, a custom domain and a custom theme. On my other blogs, I don't have this problem only to my main blog.

  29. Hi Amanda, i also have some problems with my blog. I can see embeded form on IE or Chrome but not on Firefox. On fox there is just white place. I am really frustrated. What should i do? Wait for fix from blogger team or ?     I don't know whether it is due to modifications done by me, comment form is empty.

    Just the Heading "Post a comment" shows. There is just start and end html, head, body tags inside the iframe.

    But, it is still working fine in K-Meleon 1.1.5. It also works in IE7.

    But not in FF3 or IE6.

  33. Hi Amanda, (sorry if this comes through more than once, having issues posting comments here too)

    I am using your Super Template & I am experiencing a few issues. Maybe it's me... First, the calender widget sometimes views correctly & sometimes its views as a numerical date. Second, sometimes the comments view properly & sometimes words partially appear or overlap. Last, I cannot post comments using the link in the window with the "email this post" & bookmarks & that only works with the comments set to "pop-up", not set to posting comments directly below the post.   37. I am using a Powerbook running Mac OS X 10.4.11 and Firefox 3.0.4.

    I cannot comment in embedded Blogger forms using Firefox, I have to switch to Safari 3.2.1. In fact, to make this comment, I had to switch browser, as I could not comment in your blog.

    The blog I mainly need to comment in is a collaborative blog for a private project (so I cannot give you the URL). However, it is hosted on blogspot, using a standard template. When I try to post a comment, the "Comment as:" dropdown only lists "Google account", but does not list my google account. When I press "Post Comment", I do not get asked to sign in to Blogger, instead the page reloads and the text of my comment disappears.

    I also have a problem with the Navbar - I do not appear as signed in. So whatever the problem is, it appears to be ongoing.

  39. I'm having a similar problem to atoztoa--but only on the earliest posts. At the bottom of the post you see the date, labels, Link to This Post, Create a Link, and Post a Comment, but nothing more, and no way to post a comment. The links to earlier posts are also munged, they say only Older Post and Earlier Post, and for those earliest posts they are indeed one to a page. Can you suggest what may be going wrong?

  40. This comment form at bloggerbuster works for Firefox 3.07 on Mac OSX 10.4, But I have no luck with Safari 2.03 or Mozilla 1.7.13. After adding Chitika ads my own embedded comment form in Firefox stopped working. Anyone found a cross browser solution for embedded comment form?

  42. I can't post a comment using the embedded comment box unless I switch to IE. Firefox does not give my google account as an option in the drop down menu. This is an ongoing issue it seems to me... no fix as of yet.

  45. I'm having a problem with my embedded comment. Whenever we reach to the part where we need to enter the anti-spam words, the comment box will be embedded UNDERNEATH the page links (older post, home, newer post)

    Why is that? It's really frustrating! I had to revert back to either pop-up comments or the other choice.

  49. Hey i've got a strange issue with all Blogger's embedded comment form. On Firefox (different version, different computer), if i'm not connected to my google account, i can't make copy / paste in this form. It works fine with IE or when i'm connected. Do you know if other people have the same problem ?

I've settled for using the pop-up comment form, but I noticed the comment's author's name will always be missing the first letter.   51. I decided to offer readers both: above the embedded comment form I offer my readers a link to the comment form. It's second-best off course, but I really hate the pop-up version: it's so ugly.

  71. LOL That is so funny that you have an embedded comment box! Everyone that offers to help those of us that can't comment in them USES THEM!

    I have finally sorta narrowed down my problem, but don't know how to fix it.

    My internet device (the thing you get from the phone company) is the only connection that prevents me from commenting in embedded boxes. And only on Blogger!

    Now that I know this, I am on my in-laws connection trying to find the solution to fix it.

  132. I'm not sure why it would work in posts but not static pages. If you edit those pages and check your "Post Options" at the bottom, "Reader Comments" are set to "Allow" correct?

    Do comments work on those pages if you change your entire blog's comment settings to a pop up window? (I'm not suggesting this as a permanent solution. Just checking to see if that works.)
