Would you like to display a list of the top commenters in your blog? This widget will enable you to do exactly that! If you install this widget, a list of the top ten people who have commented most in your blog will be displayed with along with the count of comments they have made.
This is a great way of thanking readers who comment regularly and is very easy to add to your blog layout using the one click widget installer
To install this widget in your own blog, simply change the title to suit your preferences and alter the URL to match that of your blog.
If your blog has a Blog*Spot URL, you should enter your URL like this:
yourblog.blogspot.comIf you use a custom domain for your blog, simply enter the URL of your blog's domain.
In either case, do not add the "http://" part! This is already rendered by the script used to display the commenter feed.
If you would like to remove your own name from the list, enter your name in the "Filter Your Name" box.
Use the form below to add this widget to your own Blogger powered blog:
This widget is based on the Top Commentators Widget for Blogger which was created by Assess My Blog. It uses Yahoo Pipes to process the last 500 comments made on your blog, and displays a list of the ten people who have commented the most in this range.
Each name is linked to the most recent comment on your blog made by this person (since it would be very difficult to create a generic script which would work for all blogs and comment settings!).
Update: I have now added an extra element which allows you to remove your own name from the list of Top Commenters (thanks to Carrotmadman6 for the tip!).
I have tested this extensively in IE6/7 and Firefox and in these browsers the script and display work just fine. If anyone notices a glitch or problem in other browsers, please let me know so I can work on solving the issue.
If you find this widget useful, please tell your friends or bookmark this post using your favorite service. I have worked long and hard to create this installer and really appreciate your help in spreading the word about this new tool :)

If you like Yahoo Pipes take a look at my MacrosReader and play with more than 25 pipes.
ReplyDeleteThank you
Thanks Amanda for this widget. I have it up and it works fine for me. Just wanted to say your tutorials are the best and they have helped me improve my blog. Thanks so much for all you do!
ReplyDeleteFor Dan: Thank you for the link, I'll take a look at that now.
ReplyDeleteFor Mudiva: I'm glad this works well for you. There are still a couple of features I'd like to work on which could improve the widget a little, though for the time being this seems to do the job quite well :)
Thank you so much for your kind comments. I'm always open to suggestions if there's anything specific you'd like to know about Blogger.
Best wishes,
Amanda
Very nice widget, thanks Amanda.
ReplyDeleteHola Amanda:
Jose a secas and me want to konw if it is possible to remove our own names from the list. I haven´t understood what you mean when you say "you would need to create your own pipe and ad a filter". Please, write up that article about it.
ReplyDeleteAnd I also think that if you want to thanking readers who comment regularly with this widget, it would be much better that each name was linked to this person's blog instead of to the most recent comment on your blog made by this person.
ReplyDeleteI agree with yo misma, if we could take out our own names and have a link that would go to the persons blog instead of the post they replied to.
ReplyDeleteYes, i agree with the above commenters that we would like the tutorial on how to remove your own name & link each commenter to their blog or their Blogger profile!
ReplyDeleteAnyway, thanks a lot for this GREAT widget! :)
For Jose, Yo Misma, Mudiva and Carrotmadman6: Thank you all for your comments. I will be writing up the tutorial tomorrow to explain how to remove your own names from the output of top commenters.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately though, I've had some great difficulty in providing links to the author's home/profile pages.
I've been experimenting with Yahoo Pipes all day in an effort to somehow accomplish this (and a similar widget I'm working on).
The problem with linking to individual blogs/profiles is that the comments feed used in this widget does not include the URL of the commenter, only the author's name. The only way to find the commenter's URL is to extract this from the actual blog post on which the comment has been left. This may be possible but so far I haven;t been able to accomplish this myself.
(If Blogger would publish the author's URL in the comments feed this would make the task SO MUCH simpler!).
I do hope you all like this widget, despite the lack of author links! Now that I've learned more about using pipes and XML feeds, I have some ideas for other Blogger widgets too which I think will be quite useful.
Best wishes,
Amanda
Thanks Amanda, I still like the widget and will continue to use it. You do such great work!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Amanda, I´m sure I'll find your tutorial (and, of course, the widget) very useful. So I'll spread the word about this new widget!
ReplyDeleteHi Amanda,
ReplyDeleteGood work. Its great to see the one-click shortcut for my top commentators widget. I appreciate your link back to my post. Thanks.
I just wanted to let you all know that I've now written up the tutorial to explain how to filter your names from the list. Read the tutorial here.
ReplyDeleteFor Manick: Thank you for stopping by! You're most welcome for the link :)
Hi Amanda,
ReplyDeleteOnce again, great work in incorporating the step to remove the author's name.
I have a suggestion. Is it possible to include more than one name from being filtered. Right now in my pipe, I am filtering three names; my own name (Manick), my old name (Admin, earlier I used this to mask my original name) and of course, Anonymous.
Keep up the good work. Thanks.
Hiya Amanda..
ReplyDeleteI want to congratulate you on such a wonderful widget. My blogger friends are all so excited over this widget..and creating such a buzz over it and thanks so much for dropping by at my blog to keep me update.
You are the best...
Muahsssss
LadyJava :)
wonderful, thanks a lot Amanda for making it so simple and helpful...
ReplyDeletecongrats for the nice work!
It´s posible a version that works with blogger-haloscan comments?
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot! I tried to use yahoo! pipe before but it's a mess so I deleted it. Your widget works perfectly in my blog! You're a star!
ReplyDeleteGreat job Amanda and thanks for sharing this widget. 10 thumbs up to you!!
ReplyDeleteRegards
Nessa, MUMBLINGS
I've been wanting this widget since i saw one at wordpress. Thanks for sharing! it's great! ;)
ReplyDeleteJean Chia
For Manick: you could try adding an extra "&filter=Name" at the end of the URL. As far as I'm aware, this should work to remove multiple names from the widget without having to create another external pipe.
ReplyDeleteFor LadyJava: Thanks for stopping by! I'm glad this widget is so useful for you and your friends :)
For Aroengbinang: Thank you for your lovely comments.
For Lordvader: I haven't used Haloscan's commenting system before, so I can't really offer much advice. It may be possible if Haloscan offer an XML/RSS feed of your recent comments, in which case you can simply replace your comments feed in the widget with the Haloscan feed instead.
For Finally Woken, Nessa and Jean Chia: Thank you all for stopping by to comment! I'm happy to know this widget is proving useful for other Bloggers.
Best wishes to you all,
Amanda
Hi Amanda.. sorry to bother you but can I just ask you a question. Why does the number of comments made by the commenter seems to decrease with time. The widget displayed as some of the commenter having 77 comments and sometime the next day it decrease to 70 or something.. My friends saw this as well.. I'm figuring it has something to do with the widget processing the last 500 comments.. Is this right??
ReplyDeleteThanks so much again for this wonderful widget... and the rest of the tutorial. You're awesome :)
For Lady Java: Yes, this is probably because the widget only parses the last 500 comments. Dark UFO asked me about increasing this number a while ago, though as yet I haven't had much time to look into it. As soon as I can, I'll post the details here for you both.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes,
Amanda
Thanks so much Amanda.. I will look forward to your post then :)
ReplyDeleteMuch appreciated :)
This blog is so great, I want to give it a hug! I tried this, and it works great.
ReplyDeleteBlogger is lacking in certain areas, and I have wanted a widget like this since "forever". Thanks fo pointing me in the rifgt direction.
I am linking you, bookmarking you, and putting a poster on my wall listing this blog of yours. I will be back, and keep my eye out for further information set forth here.
AWESOME!!!!!
Eric, from "Speedcat Hollydale"
this is a great widget, but I was searching for one that, clicking on the nick of the commenter's, we could go directly to their blog, provided on the profile or else :S
ReplyDeletelike I see in some wordpress blogs
but for now This is great :)
thanks for this Amanda...
ReplyDeletehave installed and it is working like a treat !!!!
It's very interesting hacks. Thank you a lot.
ReplyDeleteI found your blog through Entecard. I have now installed this on one my blog.
ReplyDeleteI also made a separate post about your blog because it is really helpful.
Thanks and I will keep coming back.

Nothing either time. Any suggestions?

ReplyDeleteThanks alot Amanda, your widget is very useful :)
ReplyDeleteSo great !! Thanks for shared, I used in my blog too !
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot for this kind of widget. Just installed it in my blog here:
ReplyDeletehttp://ulupongdotcom.blogspot.com
Amanda, I just installed the widget and it works great. I started looking for something like this a few days ago in an attempt to increase the number of comments. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteHi Amanda, very good widget, but how I can filter more than one name, sorry for my poor english
ReplyDeletethank you so much for this widget!! i used yahoo pipes but only appear 5 commentators! with this widget appears 10!! is it possible put the widget to count the comments from today? it's a doubt mine! i hope your answer but thanks!!
ReplyDeletehttp://alvear07.blogspot.com
Thank you so much for the widget. I have the same problem than others because i need to filter two different names and it doesn't work adding another &filter
ReplyDeleteAny help is welcome.
JP & J P
Thanks Amanda! I was wondering whether it is possible to remove more than one name from the commentators' list?
ReplyDeleteCheers!
hi Amanda thakns for sharing. I also have the same sentiments with ck, and how can I filter more than 1 name?
ReplyDeleteAs I quote from you:
"For Manick: you could try adding an extra "&filter=Name" at the end of the URL. As far as I'm aware, this should work to remove multiple names from the widget without having to create another external pipe."
It's not clear were to put that "&filer=name". With your code, there's the default filer code of "&filter=name" after the &num5. So should I put the "additional" filter after the default "&filter=name"?or like what you said after the url?
i tried both and it did not work.please help me.i would highly appreciate it.
thanks
can we display it in inline list?
ReplyDeleteThanks pretty amanda! :)
ReplyDeleteI've just installed the widget on my two blogger blogs and already have a comment.
ReplyDeleteThere was a bit of a delay in the author appearing in the top commentator list, is that usual.
Also, the author's nickname seems to be a link back to their comment, not to their own URL. Am I understanding that right.
Sorry, meant to say, great work!
Hi,
ReplyDeleteAn answer to prayer. The only problem is that although I entered my name in the filter box, it still appears in the Top Commenters box on my blog. What would you suggest to correct this?
Thanks.
Cheryl
I am new to all this would you mind taking a look at my blog? I would like to know what other more experenced bloggers have to say.
ReplyDeleteThank you! Jess
Thanks for the information about this! I have been wondering if the top commenter existed in someway for my blogger blog, I already had it for my wordpress blog.
ReplyDeleteTHanks again for this tutorial!
cool... so I wont need WP for this... I will try and thx for the pipe... I realize there is something like that... I will try to make some new one from thank you very much
ReplyDeleteHi amanda... I think the problem of the recent commen widget showing last post instead of the commenters URL has been solved. I am sending you details throuch contact page. Hope that helps :)
ReplyDeleteAlso thanks for so many good blogger hacks.
For Gaurav:
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for your emails, and for letting me know about this feature.
It's just dawned on me that Blogger have recently changed the format of comment feeds to include the URL/Profile link of commenters! Your Yahoo! Pipe works perfectly :)
I need to email you again about something and will update this post with your new information shortly.
Best wishes and thank you,
Amanda
Hi Amanda - just added your widget, and thank you!
ReplyDeleteHello, thanks for making this widget I really like it. But I have to ask, is there anyway to not allow clicking over the links? I just want it for display.
ReplyDeleteThanks again!
hi amanda!
ReplyDeletei've added your widget to my blog but unfortunately it's doesn't seem to be working...i really don't know what the problem is...
can you help me?
thanks!
Thank you SO much. This is a great way to pay tribute to commenters! :0)
ReplyDeleteAmanda, I tried numerous times to successfully download the "top commentters" widget, the title showes up on my side bar, but no list of commenters??---is it because I less than 500 comments on my blog ? I am trying to install it on my blog with blogger, blog.spot.com (I just started blogging in late April).
ReplyDeleteGJG
http://threescoreplusten.blogspot.com/
thanks a lot for this great widget. i was able to plug it in without any problems and that means a lot! all the best, sanja
ReplyDeleteThanks for this...we love this feature on our blog.
ReplyDeleteThis is fabulous! Thank you for sharing! I think I need to add your site to my Reader! ;D
ReplyDeleteThanks Amanda for this great widget. I've seen it on several blogs and wanted one for myself.
ReplyDeleteI've got it installed and it has been since Friday but is still not showing any data. Any ideas of what to try?
I got the same problem as "choosing joy". The widget installs on my blog and stuff, but never shows any data? I'd really like to use this widget so let me know why it doesn't seem to work for me.
ReplyDeletei also tried installing this one and the popular post widget but both are not working. i also checked my advance setting it is set to full.
ReplyDeletehope you can help me. thanks.
cool widget....
ReplyDeleteThnxx a lot...
does this widget not work if you have a "private" blog? I've tried everything else and still can't get anything but the title to show up. So I'm wondering . . .
ReplyDeleteI had installed but it now showing my past comment, does this mean that it start to show new comment not the old comment?
ReplyDeletethis widget rocks!!
ReplyDeletethanks :)
Hi Amanda,
ReplyDeleteI visit your blog a lot.
I installed Top Commenter's in Aabaca and a post also.
Thanks!!
It is really a nice widget Amanda, but i feel it is better to show the commentator's blogger profile or website link instead of linking to the comments that he have made..
ReplyDeleteit is nice but it doesnt work in my blog... i will try to reinstall it once more...
ReplyDeletemaybe my install b4 is not correct...
thx amanda... :)
thanks for the widget..I use it in my blog.
ReplyDeleteI've just installed it in my drl1982.blogspot.com and it seems to work fine. I hope that will boost people interest on commenting.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your work. Very useful.
Hi
ReplyDeleteI installed the Top Commenter on my blogs but it doesn't show anything. I have tried installing it a few times, but still the same problem. Any ideas?
Thanks
Hi Amanda nice job!
ReplyDeleteNow is there a way to unlimit the number of comments? My blog has dozens of thousands of comments and 500 doesnt give the full picture. How can we unlimit it or at least increase it?Thanks
I have installed it several times and it doesn't work... any suggestions?
ReplyDeleteso I see tons of comments mentioning the same problem as mine, but don't see a solution listed. I've installed the widget on both my blogs, it doesn't work on either one. It just has a title of "Top Commenters" with nothing listed below. Why? I know it works on my friend's blog.
ReplyDeletei have installed this i am telling everything
ReplyDeletethis works thanx
maya sharma
I like this widget! I wondered if there is any way to filter more than one name as my husband and I are both in the top ten list (first and last name) I'm trying to keep our last name off our blog now, but I wasn't a few months ago, so I need to be able to filter two names in order to use the widget!
ReplyDeletecindimartineau@gmail.com
hi there, i followed your instructions and i embeded the new comment form on my blog http://www.cartechhome.com but the problem is that the comment that my readers made wouldn't show up on my blog, what seems to be the problem, hope you could help me, thanks.
ReplyDeleteThanks. Useful stuff.
ReplyDeleteI've been looking for something like this for months now for my blogger blog. Yours is the perfect widget. Thank you so much! I've subscribed to your feeds. Very helpful!
ReplyDeleteAs best I can tell, it won't work with Haloscan as they publish the feed all glommed up together, no distinction between commenter name and comment content. Sad.
ReplyDeletewow thanks for his code, actually I've been looking for a widget for this and finally I saw your post :0 Thanks, I'm actually using it now... :)
ReplyDeletethanks very much!!! i love this widget!
ReplyDeleteHow long does it take before the commentators start showing up in the widget list?
ReplyDeleteI tried using it in my weblog but no results shown so far!
=(
My bad...
ReplyDeleteWhen I tried to make the widget for my blog again, I just found out that I had made a mistake writing my address down!
Good widget!
=)
I added it and it shows up on my blog but no names or numbers are listed. Just the title and hosted by blogbuster at the bottom. Does it take some time to generate the commenter names? Did I do it right and the list will come with time?
ReplyDeleteThanks so much! It's GREATLY appreciated!
i keep getting the following error?
ReplyDeleteideas...
We're sorry, but we were unable to complete your request.

ReplyDeleteI used the widget in my site and it works. Now I want to restrict the access on my site (have only some readers) but, when I do this, the widget does not work. Any suggestion to have the list of the top commenters for a restricted blog?

I have watched this widget go through many phases of working and then NOT working. It has not worked for some time now anywhere.
ReplyDeleteIt is frustrating because is slows load time and sometimes stops other elements on my blog from displaying properly.
Can anyone tell me why this happens, and is there a blogger widget to be found that ALWAYS works??

Hi Amanda, thanks for the link. I've been looking for free Top Commentator widget I can use for my blog. I am so glad I found your blog. Thanks again.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, it said "service is temporarily unavailable". Is it down? Maybe I should check back later.
ReplyDeletestill no updates/help???
ReplyDeleteHi Amanda,
ReplyDeleteIn first place I would like to congratulate you by your excellent website.
About this widget I would like to know how to make filters for several names in my blog like Manick.
"For Manick: you could try adding an extra "&filter=Name" at the end of the URL. As far as I'm aware, this should work to remove multiple names from the widget without having to create another external pipe."
I tried to do what you told to him but I couldn't make it. Can you give an example?
Looks like I have the same problem as other readers, but didn't see a reply from you answering. Does this widget work on private blogs, to display the top commenters? Mine has a title, and that it was created by Bloggerbuster, but nothing in between.. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteThanks. I added the widget over a week ago, but iys not showing any commenters as yet.
does it have to be so many comments made first?
If you could contact me at mummydgg@hotmail.co.uk that would be wonderful :)
by way o forgot to say the url for my blog i have problem on is http://www.gossipavenueblog.blogspot.com
ReplyDeletethanks in advance
awesome!!!
ReplyDeletethanx again ma'am!!
It's good, but sadly it doesn't work for me unless I can filter more than one name. I tried adding the second "&filter=Name" after the url, but it didn't work. Couldn't find a solution, and note that none has been posted here. So I had to delete the whole widget. That's a shame.
ReplyDeletemakasih atas tutornya..dah sukses nih
ReplyDeleteI added the widget. In fact I have tried adding it several times over the last couple of weeks. It simply does not appear on my blog, only the heading - Top Ten Commenters and absolutely nothing else. Yet it works for friends of mine. At the moment I am getting unavailable from your site. However, I wonder if you can tell me why the widget simply will not work on my blog. Thank you
ReplyDeleteHere is my address

This widget is a wonderful idea but simply will not work on my blog http://outsidelookingin-jeannette.blogspot.com/
ReplyDeleteI have added it and then had to delete it several times over the last couple of weeks. It works on friends blogs but not on mine. All I get it the Title - Top Ten Commenters but nothing appears underneath it. I tried leaving it on for two days but still nothing. I followed the instructions to the letter.
Please can you tell me why it is not working and if there is anything I can do to make it work.
I can be contacted at jeanno43@aol.com.
I am having the same problem mentioned above by Jeannette and others. I installed your widget months ago on both of our blogs shortly after you posted it on your site and it worked great. Now recently, it only shows the title - Top Ten Commenters. What do I need to change. Any ideas?
ReplyDeletedanielward76@gmail.com
Awesome Tool!!!
ReplyDeletei just added this to my blog and it was so easy and looks great! thanks!
ReplyDeleteit is a good plugin and it certainly makes people post more it creates a sort of game for them to be on top
ReplyDeleteThis is great! didn't know you could put on blogger. Many thanks
ReplyDeleteHey Amanda! i have the same problem as a few others with this widget now...it only says the title. I'm gonna try to delete it and do it again and hope it helps...i did notice that the HTML code is still there though.

ReplyDeleteGreat widget. I've added it to my sidebar. However, it appears that only comments left prior to March 2008 are being considered. Why would this be a glitch on my blog?

Hi Amanda... my widget recently started showing me my top commenters from a year ago. Out of nowhere it just switched from showing current status to the status as of last January. I will remove it for now but please let us know when a new version is available (right now this post is showing "Service Temporarily Unavailable")
ReplyDeleteThanks!
I tried adding this but only get the title as well. I love the idea though!
ReplyDeleteStill getting "service temporary unavailable" when I click on your link to your widget. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI took mine off months ago and decided to add this widget back in and all I am seeing is the title.
ReplyDeleteI installed the widget, but no names are showing up. Could you help me with this? www.mrsdlightful.com, sarah@mrsdlightful.com. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHey Amanda,
ReplyDeleteHow can i make this widget when i click on user nick name to go directly on his website ? It's this possible ?
You design a widget and then get months worth of questions when people have problems and you just ignore everyone?
ReplyDeleteClassy.
Well, I tried this one and it's not working just like it's not working for many others. Obviously this site is a waste of time.

ReplyDeleteHi, I'm using this widget and it just stopped working?
ReplyDeletehttp://www.justaintright.blogspot.com
Look at the far righthand column. It worked fine yesterday and today it doesn't. I didn't make any changes to my blog layout, so this is weird.
