255 Recent comments widget update! (This works in IE7)

EDIT: You can bow create your own "Recent Comments" widgets using the Recent Comments widget generator here at Blogger Buster.

Since the Recent Comments Widget suddenly stopped working in IE7, I've updated the code and uploaded it to my site in order for us all to continue using it! You can download the new code below. I've tested this in both IE and Firefox and it seems to work just fine (take a look in my right sidebar).

Here's the updated code for the widget which should work fine for all browsers (copy and paste into an HTML/Javascript widget in your blog sidebar):

You need to change the portion in red to your own blog address in order for the widget to work.

If anyone has problems using this widget, please let me know!

  5. Thanks for that! It works a treat. The only thing is that it only shows three recent posts, whereas my old one used to show 5. How do I remedy this? Also, is it possible to add a link to leave a general comment from this widget?

  7. You can easily change the number of posts by altering the variable var a_rc=3 in the code. Just change the 3 to 5, or whatever.

  8. @Karl L Gechlik: of course, I don't mind if you host the script yourself! You would need to download the script from here:

    and upload this to your own hosting account, then change this link in the widget code to match the new url of the script.

    @John Bolch: Thanks for posting your comment about the variables. I've only just got back to the computer to be able to answer these requests!

    The variables to change elements of the widget are all contained within the widget code itself rather than the external javascript, so altering them is made much easier. I will make a post about this later for the benefit of other users, and will look into the possibility of providing a form to generate the code similar to the one which appears in the Blogger Templates blog (at present I am a little busy with another Blogging project!)

    To translate this to Spanish, I would have to rewrite most of the javascript code for the widget and translate keywords to Spanish. Unfortunately my Spanish is very poor, and I think I would struggle to do this effectively! What I can do is to make the widget say "Becky comentada encendido" for example, if you would be willing to omit the date prefix?

    Let me know if this would be okay and I'll post the javascript and widget code for the Spanish version.

  13. I've now uploaded a Recent Comments Widget Generator which you can use to easily customize your widgets to suit your preferences, and then upload straight to your blog!

    Hope this helps you all get your widgets working the way you like them to. Please get in touch if there are any problems with this.

    For the last few days, when I click on the commenter's name inside the widget, it doesn't take me directly to the comment anymore, but rather to the post page.

    I think this is because the widget is reading comment address endings as "#comment-c8580156288701345694" whereas the comment address endings are simply "#c285520970679359586".

    Help!:)

    Yes it is acting strangely now. Even when using the comment permalink from the comment itself I can't link directly to the comment.

    It works on some blogs but not on others. I'm not sure why this is happening either.

    I haven't made any changes to the javascript used for this hack, so now I'm wondering if this is something happening at Blogger's end..?

    I'll look into it and will let you know when I find out what's happening.

  30. I put this widget in my blog months ago and it's worked fine. I went on to put it in the blogs of everyone I know. Working fine. Then out of the blue mine doesn't work! There are no comments in the box even though there are loads of comments. Site feed and comment feeds are enabled at full. If I change the URL address on the widget to someone else's blog I can see the comments on THEIR blog. It MUST be something to do with the permissions but it all seems like the permissions are in place. What could be going wrong????

  32. It works except that it seems to be picking up the post title from the post's URL, so the title is all in lower case, is sometimes truncated and occasionally has a number as a suffix. Anyway to pick up the actual post title?

  44. Ihr seit alle bescheuert, ihr mit eurem veoh! Bin froh das ich hier ma wieder was gefunden hab mit dem divx player. Ich mein ihr könnt ja mehere player nehmen, aber der divx player sollte immer dabei sein. Also mit den anderen playern bin ich sehr unzufrieden und es hat kaum was damit zu tun das man sich es da gleichzeitig runter lädt, man kanns ja wieder löschen wenn mans nicht mag. Bei den anderen playern ist die qualy meißt richtig beschissen, ich hoffe ihr hört nicht auf die, die was gegen den divx player haben, macht einfach weiter so, euch allen noch viel spaß!!

    Übrigens ich suchte den Film get Smart, weiß nicht zufällig jemand wo man den schon gucken kann?!?

  48. Hi, First I want to say thank you! I like this feature a lot and I already added it to my blog.

    I noticed one problem, though. I write my blog in Polish and some of the non-standard letters (like ę, ś, ó etc.) are automatically deleted from post titles in the widget, although they appear allright in the comment body. Is there a way to fix it?

  65. Since I moved our blog to its own domain name (its still powered by blogger) I have noticed that the recent comments do not seem to be updating. I have adjusted the URL in the script but new comments are not showing up.... Why?
