Since many of you would prefer to have different features for your "Recent Comments" widgets, I've decided to post this widget generator. Using this tool means you can customize your recent posts widget to your personal preferences and then automatically insert the widget into your Blogger blog!
Simply choose your preferences in the boxes below, click "Apply" and then "Add Widget to my Blog" when you are ready. I've tested this in both IE and Firefox and the widgets seem to appear fine.
";txtarea.value = txtarea.value + "\";txtarea.value = txtarea.value + "\";var addbutton = document.getElementsByName("go")[0];addbutton.disabled = false;}function defaultvalues() {document.getElementsByName("widget.title")[0].value = "Recent Comments";document.getElementsByName("ia_rc")[0].value = "5";document.getElementsByName("ishowdate")[0].checked = true;document.getElementsByName("ishowtitle")[0].checked = true;document.getElementsByName("inumchars")[0].value = "100";document.getElementsByName("style")[0].checked = true;document.getElementsByName("style")[1].checked = false;document.getElementsByName("go")[0].disabled = true;}
Please get in touch if you experience any problems using this widget generator. I hope this helps you all customize the widget to your personal preferences!

Hi,
ReplyDeleteI've added widget to my blog but my recent comments doesn't appear.
Please help.
Thanks!
Hello M Trader,
ReplyDeleteI had a quick look at the source code of your blog. It seems you only put the name of your blog without the ".blogspot.com" at the end of it.
If open up the recent comments widget in your Layouts section, you can easily add this to the end of your blog address. Alternatively, you could delete the widget and run the installer again, this time putting your full blog url (minus the http:// part) and it should work just fine for you.
Hope this helps!
Hi Amanda,
ReplyDeleteI've follow all your instructions but I still don't see my recent comments showing.
Please help.
Thanks!
M Trader
Hello M Trader,
ReplyDeleteTry using this code instead of that which is already present in your widget:
<script style="text/javascript" src="http://kunoichi.info/blogger_buster/comments.js"></script><script style="text/javascript">var a_rc=5;var m_rc=false;var n_rc=true;var o_rc=100;</script><script src="optionstradingdaybook.blogspot.com/feeds/comments/default?alt=json-in-script&callback=showrecentcomments"></script>
Hope this helps!
I don't know why I can't make this widget work since I have added it to two other blogs with no difficulty. I have tried everything suggested. I first used the code from the main widget page which didn't work, then used to generator code. No dice. The played around with adding www, or taking away the http:// and checking that .blogspot was part of the address but still no luck. The blog address is depressionhangoutsupport.blogspot.com Can you help me with this? Thanks!
ReplyDeletePS Forgot to say that when I try to use the generator, the layout screen stops showing Add New Page Element, won't let me move elements around, and won't close the widget window after I press Save changes, and doesn't respond to using Save Changes in the main layout menu. Weird.
ReplyDeleteHello Bayingatthemoon,
ReplyDeleteI've created a widget for you which seems to work fine on my test blog. Are you able to edit the layout for your blog yet? If so, you can try copying and pasting this code into your recent comments widget:
<script style="text/javascript" src="http://kunoichi.info/blogger_buster/comments.js"></script><script style="text/javascript">var a_rc=5;var m_rc=true;var n_rc=true;var o_rc=100;</script><script src="http://depressionhangoutsupport.blogspot.com/feeds/comments/default?alt=json-in-script&callback=showrecentcomments"></script>
This should work fine once you've saved it and should display the last 5 comments posted (let me know if you need this to be changed).
I hope all will work okay for you after this. If you're still having problems though, feel free to email me then I can respond more quickly for you.
Best wishes,
Amanda
Yes that worked! Thanks so much. Now if only I can find a Recent Posts widget that works!
ReplyDeleteI've been working on recent posts widgets too! The easiest method is to add a feed widget to your blog template using your own blog's feed url. Once you've saved the widget you can change the title to "recent posts".
ReplyDeleteTwo more alternatives are using JSON (more complicated and sometimes problematic), or creating a headlines widget using this tool from my tools section and adding the javascript as an html/javascript widget.
All of these methods do work! If you need more help, feel free to get in touch.
Hi Amada, Im having difficulty in placing the POST COMMENT FORM in my page. The widget didn't work... Help pls....

ReplyDeleteThis is such a cool widget! Thanks Amanda, you rock! :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for all the excellent Blogger information. I blogged about your widget and your 101 blogger templates here:
ReplyDeleteNew Blogger Templates post
Hey,
ReplyDeleteDoes this widget work if I host the blog on my own servers? I do, and currently cannot get the widget to work.. No comments are being displayed.
Any help?
Hey Amanda, is there any way to stop my own responses (to comments left on my posts) from showing up in this widget?
ReplyDeleteoops, forgot to say, my blog is :
ReplyDeletehttp://abookwormsdiary.blogspot.com/
For Brian: as far as I know, there is no way for this to work on FTP based Blogger blogs.
ReplyDeleteI can recommend an alternative though, so if you can send me the URL for your commments feed, I'll show you how to do this.
For aBookworm: your own comments are included in the same feed content as others, so there is no way to separate them. Sorry about this!
But in any case, I'm sure most would agree that a blogger's own comments add to the sense of conversation in a blog and are just as important as readers comments!
Hi Amanda
ReplyDeleteYour widget code is working a treat!!
Many thanks.
Patricia
Can this widget be used for adding recent posts to my website which is not wordpress based (that is where I have my blog)
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for helping so many!
I used this widget, turned out perfectly! Thanks a lot!
ReplyDeleteAmanda,
ReplyDeleteDoes this work also on private team-blogs? I can add the witdget to my public blog and it works fine, however when I add it to the private-tema blog and I put in the URL of that same blog I get on "Recent comment" title and then blank....(if I put the URL from a different i.e. public blog i get the recent comments in the private team-blog but from the other blog)
Hi Amanda,
ReplyDeleteI have the same question as rok s.
Thanks.
nice features. Tks Love it!
ReplyDeleteHi Amanda,
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing the widget! Now, I've got a problem for you!
I installed this same widget and everything was running smoothly. Then I moved my blog to a custom domain (using custom DNS), and now the widget doesn't show any content. I've tried both URLs (domain.blogspot.com AND domain.com), and neither seems to work.
Any ideas?
Thanks Amanda... another great widget and instant plug and play as well! Your blog is a goldmine!
ReplyDeleteIt works, but I wish I know how to change the font size.
ReplyDeleteAlso, how to make it such that when I click on the name of the commenter, it links to the home page of the commenter, not to my comments page.
Hi again, sorry for asking so much, but I wonder whether it's possible to change the date format.
ReplyDeleteWorks like a charm. Thank you very much for the widget. It's very useful!
ReplyDelete(this popup window for commenting is a bit annoying without scrollbars though!)
Cheers,
See-ming
Hiya amanda! Just want to enquire something, how do you add a little icon by the side of each comment? I've tried adding this line
ReplyDeletedocument.write('img src="file URL"/');
to
if (standardstyling) document.write('br/');
document.write('img src="file URL"/');
if (showcommentdate == true) document.write('On ' + monthnames[parseInt(cdmonth,10)] + ' ' + cdday + ' ');
document.write('' + entry.author[0].name.$t + ' commented');
but it doesn't seem to work. Can you correct the command I type above to prompt the line so that it executes the icon beside each comment? Thanks in advance!!
Hiya, I've been trying to edit how my recent comment widget will look by modifying the javascript file but to no avail. I would like to place an icon at the start of every comment displayed. I've tried the document.images command but it doesn't work. Can you give me some help? Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteHello Sylvester,
ReplyDeletePerhaps the simplest way to add the icon would be to find this line in the JavaScript:
if(m_rc==true)document.write('On '+k_rc[parseInt(i_rc,10)]+' '+j_rc+' ')
And edit it so it will appear something like this:
if(m_rc==true)document.write('<img src="http://your-image-url">On '+k_rc[parseInt(i_rc,10)]+' '+j_rc+' ')
The only other solution I could suggest would be to write a different script which uses list items instead of using the page breaks instead, and add CSS to make the icon appear as a background to each list item.
I have something which could work for this, so let me know if the first solution doesn't work and I could send you the details by email.
Best wishes,
Amanda
I had some difficult at first, but the problem was that I had two slash marks ('/') in my URL. I did this because, when I copied and pasted my blog URL onto the generator, I left the '/' at the end. Once I removed this, it worked.
ReplyDeleteNot sure if that helps anyone else...
thank you for this!
ReplyDeleteHI amanda, I have added your Recent Comments Widget in our blog but unfortunately its not working. Could you plz have a look?
ReplyDeleteWould you plz tell me how you did this automatic Widget insertion on from within your post?
@Amanda: I have the same problem that Brian has. I have a ftp hosted Blogger account. How do I get a recent comment feed?
ReplyDeletethanks for the widget..
ReplyDeletei applied this ini my blog..
I've tried this SO many times and it's still not working for me! What am I doing wrong?
ReplyDeleteIt's been working like a champ for months, but now it just hangs up and never shows the comments. Has something changed?
ReplyDeleteIt works except that it seems to be picking up the post title from the post's URL, so the title is all in lower case, is sometimes truncated and occasionally has a number as a suffix. Any way to pick up the actual post title?
ReplyDeleteI added this widget to my blog at www.sacredbird.com and it works like a charm. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteAfter trying many widgets, I finally found one that worked just fine on my blog... yours. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteHi Amanda! I love the 'recent comments' widget. I use it on my soccer blog http://fanoffutebol.blogspot.com. Thanks for sharing the latest tips and widgets for blogger!
ReplyDeleteHave a great day!

Esse site me ajudou muito, o unico problema é que eu sou do Brazil e o site todo é em inglês, AND I DON'T SPEAK ENGLISH, mas tudo bem...

ReplyDeleteI tried the widget generator, the code you gave to Mtrader and the code you gave to bayingatthemoon, but all I get is a widget that displays "Recent Comments," but no comments show up- it's just blank- I'm using the TicTac template in blogger.
ReplyDeleteMy site is http://harrigansfindahome.blogspot.com
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Got it! - Went to "Settings"- "Site Feed" and changed "Allow Blog Feeds" from NO to SHORT.
ReplyDeleteHello. Thanks for the great widget! I would like to ask a little help though in regard to the post titles. I believe the script is taking the initial POST URL title, and not the current BLOG TITLES? Thing is, there are a number of posts in my blog where I changed the titles of after saving a previous one (which Blogger took as the permanent post url titles already), and I was hoping that the script would read those new post titles. Is there a way to maybe do some editing in Blogger to change the post url titles? Will be grateful for the help on this. Thank you!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteAmanda, thanks so much! Now my Recent Comments widget works fine!

HI.. Just added this widget to my blog. Thanks :)
ReplyDeleteJust what I wanted. Is this compatitble with the 2.6 release?
ReplyDeleteWorks great, but would really like to learn how to incorporate 2 code additions, if available:
ReplyDelete1. Make the link for the commenter go to their profile or blog instead of my post where they commented.
2. Make the link of the post's title go to the correct scrolled-down area of the page, where the comment actually is, instead of the top of that post.
Thanks for the code, tho! =)
Thanks for sharing. Great website and super widget!!!

Hi Amanda!
ReplyDeleteI added the widget tonight and it appears perfectly on my page. Unfortunately, I can't edit my page elements anymore under the layout section.
I'm terrified I'm going to have to start from scratch, as I don't know how to remove Widgets without access to that.
Help!
my site is http://heavywritesthepen.blogspot.com/
Thanks,
Angel
Just my luck.. I post the comment and then it works fine.
ReplyDeleteBut I'm still a little lost. How would I be able to change the colors on the font and links so that it reads better?
Just added your widget, but it's not working properly.
ReplyDeleteIt's given me a title, but no other content.

ReplyDeleteThis widget doesn't work with PRIVATE Blogger Blogs. Do you have something else for me?
ReplyDeleteThanks in advance.

@Guy: I replied to your email a few moments ago. At the moment, I don't have anything coded which could work with private blogs, though after reading my email you may realize some other ideas which could work instead.
ReplyDeleteLet me know your thoughts on this information and we'll see what can be achieved.
Honestly I tried several tutorials on how to add this widget to my blog but none could help me out as this method actually did. I have added three widgets from this site to my blogger website and all three work just cool...

ReplyDeleteWhat i can i say that no one else has already said. It was an honer to be part of your family as i (and my sisters) were growing up. Although we lost contact over the years(some people just haven't left the good old Rochester, ha ha ha ), the memories have not been forgotten. You were a wonderful person and cousin. May your sense of adventure, humor and curiosity live on forever in your son's lives.

ReplyDeleteI have the old "template" kind of Blogger blog, not the layout one, and this widget doesn't work for me. Do you have anything for us old skoolers who don't want to upgrade to "layouts"? My blog is at susancritelli.blogspot.com
it's work,,, thx
ReplyDeleteDoes this work also on private team-blogs?
ReplyDeleteHow do you display Adsense inside your posts? I tried a couple of hacks that I found on other blogs but they did not work. With one the Ads did not show up and with the other the HTML showed up as text on my blog!
ReplyDeleteDear Amanda
ReplyDeleteI cannot make it work on my blog :-(
I've tried everything suggested here and I've read every comment, but it keeps showing me only the title and nothing under. I cannot see any comment at all!
Could you be so kind as to check my blog and see what I've done wrong? You or anyone else, of course :-)
My blog is http://lilleskvat.blogspot.com/ Because it's in Spanish, the "Recent Comments" widget is called "Últimos comentarios", just so you can find it when you check the code.
Thank you very much.

Dear Amanda

Amanda I have used this widget happily for some time now and have found it excellent as it doesn't matter where on my blog someone comments, even on posts 2 years old, the widget catches them.
ReplyDeleteHowever, yesterday it stopped working. New comments are not showing up on it and I am no longer being emailed new comments. I am not sure if this is a fault with blogger, I have double checked my settings and my email address remains correct or if it is some problem with your widget perhaps related to an update I am not sure.
If you could advise I would much appreciate it as we get a lot of comments and not being able to know what is coming in is a massive problem.
I am going to reinstall the widget now to see if that works.
Madeleine, I am experiencing the same problem at the moment. Everything was working just fine last night, but not today.
ReplyDeleteI tried removing and reinstalling and still nothing.
Any information or guidance would be appreciated!

I've tried to use this widget over and over and over again and nothing works. I'm not blind when it comes to a computer. What in the world am I missing?
ReplyDeleteAmanda, thanks a lot for the cool widget. You have created a wonderful widget. But I would like to change the color of links shown in the widget because they are of the same color as my blog's background. How do I change that??
ReplyDeleteOnce again my widget has suddenly stopped working. It seems to randomly do this every so often. I remove it and reinstall it, wait a few days and then it usually starts working again but this time it has been not working for 6 days straight which is really annoying.
ReplyDeletethanks for the script :d you made my blog wonderful hehe..

Thank you so much. I have successful installed it within 2 minutes.
ReplyDeleteFirstly it has syntax error on the codes:
blogspot.com//feeds/comment...
So, I change it the "//" before the "feeds" to "/"
becomes blogspot.com/feeds/comments
Then it works perfectly!
Again! Thank you so much. Keep this good works ya. Pro programmer!
